Layout
The interior of the restaurant is very spartan. Plain wooden benches and tables. The manager said this is no different from typical diners in Australia frequented by working class folks. Over at the counter, the specialties are written on a blackboard though there are also menus available. There is also a section where baked goods are made. Customers can see their orders baked right before their eyes.
The Food
As mentioned before, the specialties are a mix of Australian and Filipino. There are Filipino dishes such as Pancit and Kare-Kare. For the latter, they use Bagnet which is very tasty though the peanut sauce could use more zest.
Tasty Tucker’s main specialty is the meat pie. This is to Australians what hamburgers are to Americans. As the name suggests, meat packed in a crusty pie. They come in various flavors – minced meat, steak and mushroom and even curry beef. Each one of them is very tasty but most especially filling that you would not have to order anything else.
They also offer various baked goods such as bread of different shapes and sizes and cakes which are up to par with those sold in other bakeries and coffee shops. They too also taste really good considering they are freshly baked and well-prepared.
Also try the Cheat-Day Burger! It is so scrumptious you will be full in no time!
When I drive, I make sure that I pay attention on the road not just for the sole reason of defensive driving but to spot newly opened restaurants or cafes that are new to me. I’m on a continuous pursuit of happiness and trying out different food places is definitely one of my life’s greatest pleasures. I worked for almost 4 years in Boni, Mandaluyong and driving around Pioneer made me discover a few nearby cafes/restaurants that are worth the visit. Some of them are Mozaic Living, Joey Pepperoni, The Giving Cafe, etc. Tasty Tucker, being one of the few, already caught my attention few years back, but I never had the chance to actually pay a visit and it’s probably because of the not-so-inviting facade of the cafe. So when Zomato invited me over, it immediately rang a bell and since I was free that time, I said YES!
More meat pies please!
Product: I haven't been to many restaurants that serve Australian food so Tasty Tucker got my interest right away. They specialize in making these delicious meat pies that are just filled so much savory goodness, you can't have just one. Of course, they also serve other dishes and pastries. Their pastries are also worth the purchase.
They have different flavors of meatpies (Regular: Php 150.00/Party Meat Pies Php 50-55.00): Steak & Mushroom, Spicy Beef, Mexican, Pepper Steak, Minced Beef, Chicken Curry, Steak & Bacon, Curry Steak, and Tuna Pimiento. Each flavor will be what you expect it to taste like. The party sizes are as big as an average palm and the regular ones are probably around 3-4 inches.
They also have sausage rolls (Php 100.00): which don't taste like your regular sausage. It tasted kind of like a meatball but has a lighter taste. It's actually good even though it wasn't like anything we expected.
They also offer Filipino/American/Italian cuisines. There's pizza, pasta, silog dishes, pansit, kare-kare, we also had ribs, buffalo wings, and burger. There's really a lot to choose from and they're all have a reasonable price. I loved the ribs, it was sweet and was very tasty up to the last bite. I didn't the Filipino dishes as much because I was preserving my appetite for the pastries and desserts. But I tasted their kare-kare which I think should be cooked together with the greens rather than cooking them separately so it has more flavor. The wings were tangy and sour in just the right amount for people who love wings to like them.
The pastries, like I said is really worth your money. I totally loved the cheese muffin and the revel bar. The muffin was so tasty that you'd just end up realizing every single cheese bread you ever had was bland. The revel bar wasn't "nakakaumay" which makes it a perfect partner for a hot cup of coffee.
Everyone went crazy for the cheesecakes. Especially the raspberry cheesecake. Another perfectly made dessert because it's also not nakakaumay. It was creamy and the cheese is just the right amount of salty and even the syrup doesn't have such a strong flavor. It just mixes really well together.
Venue: Tasty Tucker is a restaurant/cafe located in HRM or near Pioneer St. Market. They all have the same owner. The interior looks like an Australian canteen which was their target. Very country theme-like. I didn't get to interact much with the staff besides the hello and goodbye greetings. The manager was there and she was the one who assisted us and even chatted with us. Thank goodness this place is near me because I'm getting me some of those meat pies and pastries again.
