Mad for Wagyu?! I know I always am. LOL!
For the longest time, I always wanted to try out the Mad for Wagyu or Mad for Lobster dinner buffet at Edsa Shangri-La Hotel. But because of work, I have always been unable to go. Thankfully, I planned my birthday weekend perfectly and was able to go and have an awesome dinner.
Okay, my birthday was on the 10th, which fell on a Sunday, so it was neither a Mad for Lobster or Wagyu night. But, since I went to the Shangri-La at the Fort a few months back for lunch, and had an epic buffet, which had a really good seafood selection that included lobster, I opted to have the Mad for Wagyu that was available on Saturdays only, so technically, the 9th for that weekend. I really didnāt mind having my dinner buffet on the eve of my birthday than on the day itself.
For weeks, I planned in advance and I was so excited. Plus the fact that I was able to score a 30% discount of a wonderful food app. My cravings for wagyu just built up more and more until the day finally came. :)
Just like any Shangri-La buffet, my expectations are high and as always, they are always met, or in some cases exceeded. As soon as I got to Heat, I must admit, I was blown away with the selection of food. From big prawns to delectable wagyu dishes, I didnāt know where to start. But I knew I was going to try loads of dishes.
I love sushi to the max, and when I saw there was a Wagyu Maki, I knew I had to get that. Yes, I know sushi and makis are rice fillers, and occupy prime realty space in stomachs during buffets, but just like sashimi, there are just somethings I cannot resist in a buffet. Anyways, as for the wagyu maki, it was excellent. The wasabi was a surprising kick and I loved the black sesame seeds on it.
Another wagyu appetizer that I had was the Wagyu Carpaccio. It was amazingly tender. Though it was raw, it was almost melt-in-your-mouth. With the horseradish mayonaise, it was amazing. Plus, great paired with my Cesar Salad.
For my other appetizers, those of which were not a wagyu dish, I got a few other makis and sashimi of course. Tuna, salmon, crab, etc. I tried a lot. Haha! The Norwegian Smoked Salmon I most definitely had with capers.
I am not sure prawns and mussels would count as appetizers, but perhaps a main course. For my birthday meal, they were appetizers. Why? Simply because people were always running to get them. When I was at the Japanese station, I saw the chef refill the prawns and mussels nearby with bigger pieces, so I knew I had to rush to get those bigger pieces. Then soon after, I watched, mesmerized at the wok filled with butter and garlic as the chef put my prawns in it. I wanted to swim with them! Haha!
One cannot go wrong with buttered-garlic prawns. It truly is a match made on seafood heaven. I sucked on the entire prawn, from its body to its head. It was so sinfully rich, I just couldnāt stop myself. The prawn meat in itself was soft and sweet. The prawns were to die for!
Of course, I canāt forget about the mussels. They were really plump and meaty. I loved the mussels.
For my main course pickings, there were several wagyu dishes to pick from, but I bee-lined my way to the carving station right away. There were 3 wagyu meat loads to get, and trust me, I did get a thick slice of them all. They were: Rib-Eye, Prime-Rib and Beef Wellington.
I loved them all, and they were wonderfully drowned in peppercorn sauce and some mint jelly. But, I will talk about them one at a time, starting from my fave out of the 3.
Rib-Eye: Due to its fat content, it was clearly the tastiest and the juiciest for me. The fat was literally melt-in-your-mouth, barely needing to chew it.
Prime-Rib: Yes, I know this may also include the rib-eye part, plus if Iām not mistaken another part of the cow, located next to the rib section. Anyways, I found this cut a bit dryer.
Beef Wellington: Gordon Ramsey, eat your heart out! Known to be Ramseyās signature dish, did he ever make a wagyu version of it? Anyways, this was the least fattiest out of the 3. I donāt think it had any fat to it to be honest, so it was the toughest from the 3, and the least flavorful. The mushroom duxelle around it brought a different flavor component to it. It had a more umami and earthier flavor to it. Really yummy!
Wagyu Bulalo anyone? My jaw dropped as soon as I saw it, and I was rendered speechless as soon as I tried. The bulalo was rich and beefy in flavor. The broth alone was very, very, very satisfying to my foodie core. The meat chunks were super soft that I was able to cut it with a spoon in my bowl. Undoubtedly, the best bulalo that I have had in my life!
There was a chef that I recognized. I kept eyeing him every time I walked around and saw him, because for a while, I couldnāt quite remember when and where I knew himā¦ And then it finally hit me.
Chef Marz (spelling of his name might be wrong. Sorry), at the Japanese station, was a chef that I knew for at least 15-20 years. He has been in a few other Japanese restaurants in the past like, Fukuya at the Glorietta food court long agoāsome of you might remember it. Well, he too remembered me and my love for Uni/Sea Urchin. He offered to get me some to my surprise as I didnāt see it displayed. He then said itās an off the menu item, but they do serve it. How could I refuse?!
Soon enough, he served it personally to my table. An orange was partially carved out, and that is where he put the uni in. And he did put quite a lot in. It was super-duper yummy. The orange and uni kind of looked like a cake of sorts. Yup, it was then dubbed my birthday cake as I didnāt have one. Chef Marz made my dinner extra special. I totally thanked him for it and became way happier.
Dessert was simple. With everything that I ate, I knew my sugar was at its limit already. So all I had was a scoop of Berry Yogurt Gelato with a bit of dried/candied fruit toppings, rainbow sprinkles and baby marshmallows. There was quite a few flavors to pick from, but I asked the chef what their best pick was and they suggested Berry Yogurt. No surprise, it was very good. A bit sour and sweet. It was a light dessert and somewhat a palate cleanser. Great way to end my awesome Mad for Wagyu birthday buffet dinner. :)
Food: 5.0 ā Across the board, the food was excellent. Nothing was a bad pick.
Price: 5.0 ā The non- discounted price for the buffet was at around P2,600. With my 30% discount, it dropped it down to around P1,800. Even without the discount, the price is very doable for a buffet with such a selection and wagyu dishes to pick from.
Service: 5.0 ā I would give it a 10 if I could!
Ambience: 5.0 ā For some people, the dark lighting can be a bit bothersome. But I didnāt have complaints.
Overall, Heat was an excellent place to have my birthday buffet dinner. Chef Marz made it more special thank to my uni cake. I canāt imagine having a better dinner elsewhere. I would be mad at myself if I didnāt go back to try the Mad for Lobster buffet.
I must go backā¦ soonā¦
