My family had been meaning to eat here since our friends did and the experience was great! The servers were accomodating, and very welcoming. The food might be a little expensive but its worth it!!! I loved the sushi's a lot and I stuck to eating my normal pick of ramen and rice bowls but I'll definitely try something out of comfort zone next time

Ambiance feels like authentic Japanese izakaya. I think the owner is Japanese. We ordered tamagoyaki, yakitori, omurice, chicken cheese katsu and katsudon. Overall, food was good. We especially enjoyed Tamagoyaki, yakitori and chicken cheese katsu. For the Omurice, I wish there was less ketchup and more meat/veggies in the rice. The presentation looks great though. We'll probably visit again to try other dishes.

My go to japanese izakaya in project 8. Their wagyu cubes are very delicious. The owner and servers are very engaging. Order usuallu takes a while to come out but the quality and taste justify the long wait.

Wagyu cubes, yakitori and salmon sashime are my usual orders.

Our go-to place whenever we are craving for authentic jap food. Our must-haves everytime we dine here : Salmon sahimi, wagyu, grilled saury, grilled salmon, karaage and yakitori. Best to experience this on their tatami room.

The wagyu saikono was divine! It was tender & perfectly seasoned! The yaki-salmon & ebi tempura were perfectly cooked as well. Yakitori dishes were very good; we had the torimomo, ninnikuma, buta-kashka & buta-bara. They had an interesting selection of ice cream...a bit pricey but well worrh it.

You have to come early as there’s limited parking & seats. But I will definitely come back to try out their other dishes.

This is our to go place for authentic Japanese food. We find the price reasonable as to its taste and authenticity. The food were cooked by their Japanese Owner, Kakashi (Not sure with the name) Also, Miss Janet is very attentive to the needs of their restaurant goers.

My favorite food are the following:
Okonomiyaki
Gyudon
Sanma-Shioyaki
Wagyu
Edamame
Maki
Sushi

They also serve ice cream from Japan, and it tastes good but on the pricey side, pero worth it!

I don't mind going here over and over again.

Good thing, they have already expanded their restaurant space few years ago and added some parking slots too.

Food - 4
Service - 3
Ambience - 3
Price - 4
Accesibility - 3

Food: We ordered ebi tempura, uni sushi, salmon sushi, salmon unidon, kani salad. Everything's quite good except that they forgot to drain the water on the kani salad after they washed the veggies.
Service: Service is kinda slow, but servers are polite. They also look neat and welcoming. They greet as customers enter and leave.
Ambience: The place is packed and interior has a japanese vibe. However its a bit cramped.
Price: The price is cheaper than most japanese restos.
Accesibility and hours: Place is open from 5pm to 1am. They also have their own parking space. The place is somewhere in Mindanao Ave, probably not very accessible to people who takes public transpos.

Will I eat here again? Yes. Whenever I feel like eating authentic japanese cuisine.

Must try: Salmon Uni Don. 😍😍😍

One of our go to restaurants everytime we eat out. I rarely rate restaurants but with shonantei i'll make an exception. Food is always incredible, food is quality and the price is pocket friendly.
The owners and crew are friendly and very accommodating.
Well, to end my review ive got nothing bad on the place. Try it out! I promise you wont regret it other than you spending way too much money on eating out so much at shonantei hahaha!

From the name itself, it is an izakaya. But has tables and chairs for group diners. really affordable authentic Japanese food. I didn't know they have great, tasty food! Also good for groups with kids. They even have an area where you can sit on the pillows on the floor!

Finally had dinner here with the partner.  No luck on our first try as parking was full and it's a risk to park along Mindanao Ave.  The place is small but  comfortable.  The place could be loud but there's a sense of fun as the owners mingle with the diners.  There's also an air of authenticity as  the owner/cook is Japanese.  Ingredients are imported. The wife is confident with what they serve that she said we don't have to pay for our food if we don't like it.  We ordered the Nikutamagotoji Soba, Gyoza, Agedashi Tofu, Kani Salad.   Gyoza was slightly different from what is usually served as this had wings (Hanetsuki), the filling is also quite dense.    Food tasted very good.  Pricing is very reasonable to what you are being served.  Will try the ramen and tempura next time.

Second visit.  We tried the Chasu Ramen and Gyudon.  Both were flavorful and the meat was tender.

Third visit.  We tried their Tempura and Wagyu.  Wagyu was very tender and addicting.

Izakaya Shonantei serves authentic Japanese Dishes. Their Salmon Sashimi is the best that I’ve ever tasted! They also taught us the proper way to eat their dishes. The girl who explained each dish was very accommodating and approachable. I love their Yakiniku-don (10/5) and Gyudon (4.5/5). I gave them a perfect overall score because we really enjoyed our dining experience.

The food is extremely good! Our server emphasized that they really wanted to preserve the Japanese cuisine, hence no fusion (california rolls) and many Japan-sourced ingredients. Fish was imported directly from Japan, and they had other dishes that were authentically Japanese.

The Ochazuke that our server, Janet, who is also the owner, recommended was really something that took me out outside my comfort zone! I got the Tuna Chazuke that was rice that had soup made of sake + mirin + dashi topped with raw tuna that was eventually cooked because of the hot soup. It also had shredded seaweed so the flavors really worked well together. ❤️

The food is really good, though their servings are not big as we expect it to be. The price is so so. You could get the same taste for a cheaper price from other Jap resto.

Parking your vehicle here is quite difficult since the resto itself is located at Mindanao Avenue. There is not much parking space so it is advised if you go here during their lean time of the day.

Best legit Japanese Restaurant I know. We just chanced upon it while browsing for late night Japanese restaurants in Quezon City, little did we know we'd find a gem.

We super love their rice meals, Kaikadon and Yakinikudon. Their Salmon Sushi is also the best I've tasted. The owner is also really nice. She showed us the ingredients they use. None of the cheap powdered stuff! Their prices are also reasonable. We go to this place maybe 5-6x a month. Lol. We've tried a ton of Japanese restos, but this here, by far, is the best. Parking could be tricky though.

Food comes slowly as they ensure quality! Considering that my husband is a picky eater..he gives this resto a 2 thumbs up! No sugar coating! Love love love our first dining experience here. We have eaten at so many Japanese restaurants, but this one is outstandingly good. The owner, Ate Janette assisted us and gave us the nutritional benefit of eating the salmon together with the treated radish which you will not get from other Japanese restaurants. Good food, great service. We'll surely come back!

Ever since the first opening of this restaurant, my family frequently visits Shonantei. It’s walking distance from our home. Janet and Takeshi are very accommodating. The price is mid-range and the waiting is quite long but the food is very much worth the price! My parents, most especially my dad, have been to Japan a number of times and they can testify that their food is as authentic as it can get.

Our family’s usual orders, which Janet knows very well, are the following:
-Okonomiyaki, the best one my family has tried compared to famous food establishments specializing in this dish 😉 We sometimes order for a 2nd round!
-Salmon head, my parents do not leave the place without ordering this
-Gyoza, they have a unique approach to its presentation and it is very juicy yet has the right amount of crunch on one side and softness on the other
-Katsudon, it may look like an average portion but it keeps my brothers and I full! The sauce is just the right balance and taste to complete the dish 😌
-Karaage, super juicy and crispy!! I order this when I don’t feel like eating rice but want something savory
-Ice Cream, they have a variety of Japanese ice creams and you can ask them what they have available. They’ll bring the basket to you so you can choose some. Whatever you choose, it’s a good one for sure!

The place is small and it tends to get quite loud inside but my family doesn’t mind since it’s where people gather and catch up. This is where we also bring our relatives and they end up being frequent customers as well. Shonantei is a hidden gem of Project 8. ❤️

The best yakitori and karaage in my humble opinion. A large part of the experience is of course hanging out with Janet, the owner of Shonantei. She really brings out the entertainment. The tuna in wasabi is a great cold appetizer, and the kaki butter is great with rice. End the meal by asking for their ice cream.

Wonderful experience! The overall experience is Tops! They took me into the YouTube videos of certain food places in Japan. Love the traditional vibe. My first foray, which I heartily recommend, is to order assorted sashimi, consume Japanese ice cream then wash it all down with your favorite plum wine. Will surely come back and venture into the more unusual dishes they serve. I'd give 5 stars if they add more fresh and unusual dishes. But I know since they are located far from a good market and high quality seafood is so hard to come by, I don't really fault them for not having my favorites such as fresh giant oyster and a variety of sashimi peculiarities.

Probably the best neighborhood Jap Resto around the Mindanao/Tandang Sora area. Tried the Negi Toro Don as recommended by the very friendly owner. It was very fresh and tasty. The Grilled Habachi was perfect as per my Aunt. Kids loved the Miso soup. Gyoza and Ramen weren’t bad either. Only challenge would be parking on a busy night, but they have a very friendly attendant who’ll look after your car. Overall experience was great. Will recommend and will surely be back.

This is an izakaya or in Japan it is an after-work drinking place. They serve beers - locals and Japanese, shochu, sake and other drinks. Then this is complemented with their superb dishes with all authenticity as for sushi, sashimi, yakitori, donburi, maki, men (noodles) and a list of otsumami (or pulutan).

So, going here is really for drinking. But now they are also serving Ramen - Shoyu and Miso flavored.

And to top this, try to have a drink or two with Master Chef/Owner, Takeshi Kubo san, a good Tagalog-speaking Japanese. Surely, you'll love the place.

This place is really a superb hole in a wall restaurant. Operated and owned by a japanese chef who married a filipino wife who happily entertains guests who arrive especially loyal customers, shonantei is a must visit for those willing to travel far good japanese cuisine. They now expanded their place to accomodate more customers, though many old fans of shonantei still miss the old tiny restaurant which had a more "japanese" touch to it.

I change my mind on my statement that I don't like people to know about this place so I can have it all for myself. Haha It is a wonderful place and I want people to know about this place so it will always live and serve their great food!😁

Another update: they accept credit cards.
(And yes, we're here again Nov 02 update)

Update:
Am here having dinner and the following photos with ramen are our new find. Their ramen the original in miso is heavenly! Another find is that they sell radish kimchi which is amazing! They also sell pickled ginger in packs. I'm in love!

❤️🍣

Been wanting to eat in this place after I've read the reviews of the amazing people who dined here.

Finally, after my (with hubby of course) adventures around Trinoma, SM North (which by the way is too huge for me to walk around on and I prefer not to go back there since it's too huge for me), and Vertis North (mostly the establishments aren't open or areas aren't occupied yet and I warn you, do not go to their Timezone yet to play because the machines don't spit out tickets😂) in search for healthy (no preservatives, msg, magic sarap etc. and salt) cuisines/food I found this Japanese place via Zomato.

I have to confess 2 things:
1. I honestly didn't want to write this review in fear that a lot of people will find this jem of a place and it'll be difficult for me to go back (you know it might get more jam packed next time).
2. I'm a struggling vegan to be *embarrassing* and this place just pulled me back to being a pescatarian.

What wowed me?
1. Their security guard was very friendly.
2. Their servers were very friendly and knowledgeable (menu-wise)
3. They prepare their food fresh (I don't mind the waiting time)
4. You can ask them to remove something from their ingredient list (if you're allergic to something or if you have a certain diet-no salt for my dad)
5. They deboned our grilled fish with chopsticks in front of us.😱
6. The taste of their food...AMAZING!

We ordered the following:
Raw salmon with fish roe on a bowl of rice, grilled mackerel, grilled saury, two rice, salmon sashimi, mackerel sashimi, pickled ginger maki and 2 orders of another pickled vegetable maki. Their hot tea is free. All of those are around 1,600+

Not bad for a healthy dinner. My husband loved their wasabi! We were told that it was authentic that's why it tasted so "potent" really made him tear up!😂

So there, I hope you'll try and visit the place. We had an amazing dining experience.

Enjoy!❤️

P.S. Excuse the empty dishes.😂 We finished almost everything before I remembered to take a photo.

A very good friend invited me to a Japanese dinner which immediately I said yes to. She, being a chef of a popular Greek restaurant in UP Town Center is someone I enjoy having a meal with. And the place, Izakaya Shonantei, which I haven't tried nor heard of added to my curiousity. And so I went with a help of Waze.

I entered the tiny, unpretentious restaurant profiling the type of customers who come here and of course, the food that's being served. I was looking for my friend when I was greeted by a Japanese fellow (he being the chef). I knew at the second that I was going to enjoy that night's Izakaya Shonantei experience.

And enjoyed we did. I did. From the cold Somen to their Uni Sushi to the Chicken Cheese Katsu, everything was perfect. But my favorite was their Yakitori. It was, as they say, to-die-for.

Don't expect too much with the interior; neither with the parking nor the servers because you are bound to get massively disappointed. Just relish the food and the prices. And I guarantee that you will go home a happy man (or a happy bitch). Believe me you.

5.0 for the Authentic Japanese taste & quality of food ❤ Great value for money too! Love the salmondon and hot soba as always!

2.0 for very slow service, inattentive & impolite servers/waiters (witnessed a female server having an argument with a customer who just requested for some slices of lemon/lime for her sashimi), and inconsistent service charges (there are times that they will charge you; there are times that they won't). Hope they will train their servers on good customer service and be more transparent on the menu if they will add some service charge.

Thanks!

DEFINITELY, the most authentic izakaya here in the country!

Izakaya Shonantei was a gem to find... especially since we live in QC. It's one of our two favorite Japanese restaurants in Metro Manila, the other being Seryna in Little Tokyo. The owner is the chef, and he's pure Japanese. Needless to say, the flavors are authentic... but the best part is that they have items in the menu that's very hard to find locally, such as edamame, natto, and even LAMUNE (off menu)!!!

The restaurant even has a tatami section with low tables (where you really have to sit seiza style) and traditional dividers. The servers also sit taking your order... one of the first things I noticed in Japan.

Izakaya Shonantei recently underwent some renovations. How it affected their ambience, I cannot say yet as of the moment. Perhaps a repeat visit is in order. 😊

Due to my field of study, I often find myself going to Japan and I've come to love Japanese food. But ask anyone who went to Japan and they'll tell you that authentic Japanese food tastes so much better than what is offered in other so called Japanese restaurants. Others just can't get the taste right since they tend to over-season.

That's not the case with Shonantei. They offer non-pretentious, honest-to-goodness, legit Japanese food. The flavors are so authentic that it reminds me if Japan everytime I dine there. Hands down, the best in QC. This is not a fast food joint though, so expect to wait for your food.

I recommend their Wagyu, Okonomiyaki, Karaage and Salmon dishes. My parents meanwhile love their Soba noodles, it's really good. Sometimes, they offer dishes that isn't listed in their menu such as eel, curry, and omurice so check with Ms. Janet for that as well.

Some tips:
-You can ask for complementary tea, it's free of charge.
-They also sell imported Japanese ice cream, which is REALLY, REALLY GOOD.

Food 5/5 - Putangina masarap okay. Parang gago yung wagyu tangina bat ganun yun sobrang sarap.

I lived in Japan for awhile, at lagi akong nasa izakaya, sobrang lapit ng vibe. Maingay, masaya, makulit pati yung servers. All in all, a good experience.

Balik ako next week.

What can I say about Shonantei that hasn't already been said, it's hands down THE BEST Japanese resto in Quezon City. This is the only place that makes me feel like I'm back in Japan ( aside from Little Tokyo in Makati). People who've spent time in Japan will vouch for Shonantei.

Food: 10/10 - Don't me. Its good.

Ambiance: 11/10 - Extra points for always energetic and semi-drunk Takeshi San ( owner and chef) behind the sushi counter. Sacho, how do you walk in those wooden slippers??? So genki :)

Service: 10/10 - They treat all their customers like family.

Admittedly Shonantei has some flaws; Service can get a little slow specially on peek hours or big groups, and when Takeshi San isn't in the kitchen, the food can get a bit inconsistent. Luckily the chances of you experiencing these issues are slim, and if you ever you do find your self in these situations, the food always makes up for the wait.

MUST TRY:
Sushi/ Sashimi
Wagyu Cubes ( you will cry)
Hotate Butter
Yakitori ( all the yakitori)
Hijiki
Japanese Alcohol ( warm sake takes everything to another level)

What people don't get about Shonantei is the concept. It's not a restaurant, nor is it a bar; It walks a thin line in between both called IZAKYA ( the only true Izakaya in Metro Manila). Don't order all your food in one go, try a few dishes at a time and enjoy a bottle of sake or beer while waiting for the next course. This is the bread and butter of Shonantei.

I discovered this place a little over a year ago while en route to NLEX and back. Figured I'd convince my boyfriend to try it out with me and we've had no regrets since. It is, by far, the best Japanese restaurant in Manila. Fish is always fresh, food is cooked as you order it, and staff is always super accommodating. Miss Janet is a perfect host! :) she even accommodates my love for uni and salmon by combining it just for me! Try their karaage, their sushi and sashimi, the wagyu, the gyudon, and (a childhood favorite) shake chazuke! But honestly, try anything. You won't be disappointed! Be prepared for the wait time, though. They cook your food fresh each time.

Friends especially relatives have been constantly reminding me to visit Shonantei, a small Japanese restaurant along Mindanao Avenue. It’s been over a year but they still keep on mentioning the place, the food and Japanese chef Takeshi. Until one day, my ninong brought home some Negi Toro Maki and a plate of Yaki-Gyoza which I initially thought was tikoy (Gomen’nasai). 😀

great authentic Japanese food.   its more of a bar than resto.  the serving size is for "pulutan"  Service is great! One of the owners, a filipina, was so accommodating and has excellent customer service skills.

Its a bit pricey though.  you need a budget of 1,500- 2,000 for two (2) persons.  without alcoholic beverage.   Their 5 kinds sashimi is about 850.00.  Grilled mackerel is (if i remember correctly) 280.00.  San mig light is 60.00 (?)

Parking space is ultra limited.  So be patient.

Love their wasabi because its "authentic". We tried their yakiniku don, miso soup, gyoza covered in something idk what it is but its nice, sashimi, tuna maki love their tuna maki because its not all rice most part of the maki was tuna, they are very generous with the tuna, beef and chicken bbq it was perfectly grilled. Their ambiance was perfect because you can sit "japanesely" here. What i think they lack is the tea upon ordering i guess? But they do have an appetizer of cucumber and nori in some japanese sauce lol. Over all might still comeback because of their tuna maki. But the parking was not that okay. We went here friday night and there were already 4 cars. I do hope that they will have a bigger parking lot.

This restaurant is actually very close to my house. I never noticed it until my cousin recommended it to me. They usually don't open until 530 - late. Don't judge a book by its cover. Upon first glance, it's not much to look at. It's a very small place with a cozy, clean atmosphere. The owner and his wife are very accommodating to their customers. Don't expect the food to be served quickly. The restaurant stresses that with good food takes patience and time for adequate preparation. Here is a brief review of what I ordered :

Okonomiyaki - Very delicious! The portion seems small, however, it's very filling. Very heavy and creamy sauce on top. No skimping on ingredients. Very fresh . My boyfriend, who lived in Japan for quite some time  knows good Okonomiyaki when he tastes it.

Gyoza -Unlike gyoza from other restaurants, the gyoza here are baked! They are presented in a white bubbly crust that compliments the juicy dumpling very well.

Sashimi - I was disappointed with this because of serving size. For P250 you get around 3-4 very thin slices of sashimi. It was fresh and the quality was good, but for this price I expected a bit more.

Tonkatsu - I loved this. It was very light and crispy. The salad that comes with is very fresh and the dressing was delicious.

Shonan Tei Japanese Resto Bar has left me in awe for the past year. It is that one tiny bitsy restaurant in Mindanao Avenue which almost always have cars outside. It made me wonder how good their food is. The place seems like a legit Japanese restaurant. It has very limited seats. The servers were nice and attentive. Ms. Janet who is the owner and wife of the chef was very accommodating. The salmon sashimi and wagyu beef were good. Even the gohan (rice) is great. But the best thing that happened in Shonantei is their cold sake. I imagine cherry blossoms with it. No kidding. I just thank Japan for coming up with that drink.
Only concern is that it's pretty hot in the inner area (where you sit japanese style- on the floor), but that's tolerable. Service is good anyway and the owner is very accomodating.

I love Japanese food and this is the nearest Japanese restaurant near our house so we just had to try this. Me and my friends ate here one night. The place is pretty small and there are just a few tables. As soon as we were settled, we ordered our food. We got salmon sashimi, chicken cheese katsu & wagyu steak. I'm the only one who ate the sashimi and I find it very fresh. The wagyu steak is so delicious but the serving is so small. But for the price, it's okay since wagyu steak is really expensive in other restaurants. My favorite is the chicken cheese katsu. Unlike regular katsus, it's not covered in breading. Cut is quite thick so it's good for sharing. I love that they offer authentic Japanese food - don't expect fusion food here.

Ambiance is casual - it has this homey feeling. The co-owner, Ms. Janet, is so accommodating and feels like an old friend. She explains how their food is made.

One Night Affair
(not a fast food review)

My Instagram Friends!"

Special na seaweeds at 4 years smoked fish (salmon) at 7 types of Miso at madami pang iba.

Pinaghatian at nilasap. Pinili namin na in between.

Overall. Aprub! Kung Presidentiable ang Shonantei, boboto ko to.

A favorite after-work hangout for me and the hubby. Value for money as they serve perfect and amazingly fresh food each time, never scrimping on quality. They actually care about what you put inside your body and they'll even explain how they maintain this level of excellence with their food! This is also how authentic it gets: no fusion items on the menu, and absolutely no green plastic leaves on your sashimi plate! Cold beer and drinks, relaxing at-home ambience, and warm, delightful host-tandem Ms. Janet and Chef Takeshi-san whom you'd meet once and feel like you have extended family. I've worked in hotels in Manila and abroad and am a proud foodie -- this is hands-down the best Japanese resto in Manila for me so far. Best of all Shonantei is in my neighborhood! :-)

We celebrated mother's day here. Even without a reservation, the owner was very nice to accommodate our family. Food was great. We super love the owner Ms Janet, she's a very nice host. She made sure that we are comfortable and are enjoying their authentic Japanese dishes. The area where we are seated is infront of the open kitchen that's why it's kinda warm, they have ample ACs but it can't beat the heat from the open kitchen ? give it a try.

Shonantei is one of the few authentic Japanese restaurants within QC. Their food selections are not as many or diverse as more popular Japanese restos but you can be assured of delectable Japanese food most especially if you appreciate Japanese cuisine. One of my favorites is their hot ramen matched with gyoza. I have tried their skewered dishes like the Yakitori and they are juicily delicious! And of course, you should try their sushi and match it with sake. I also love their Okonomiyaki. I have gone back several times already and I have not been disappointed yet with any of the dishes I ordered. Yes, it may take quite a bit for your food to be prepared but the wait is worth it considering they use genuine Japanese ingredients to prepare the food. Kudos to Ms. Janet for her hospitality and, of course, to her husband chef, Takeshi, in making sure the food you order is done the authentic Japanese way. Gochiso sama deshita!
