We celebrated our boss’ birthday there. It was my first time to eat there and I was truly impressed.
Parking - if you’re early parking is not a problem, the parkjng attendant and security guard were very helpful
Ambiance - the open air table area has a garden feel, the tables inside are spread out on two levels, both spacious. The lower level has a beautifully tiled floor, the upper level has wood flooring. The lower level has a brick like wall off to one side and glass windows all around. Illumination was from simple antique style chandeliers and some decorative wall lights. The levels were decorated with European old style plates, some paintings, bookshelves with old edition hard cover Reader’s Digest for a 1970s homey feel. Wooden tables and chairs with padding - very stable. Superb background sounds - very relaxing jazz music. The plates come from different collections... this style was “shabby chic” - my boss explained. It reminded me of antique-style dinner ware and those china that grandparents displayed in their cabinets.
Food - Among all the food ordered, I loved the sinigang na salmon belly sa miso... it had a little amount of vegetables but with ample salmon and full flavored soup. The black paella and seafood paella were both delicious - I preferred the seafood paella with its buttery-feel, and well-seasoned round, plump rice. Other food items ordered were calamares, fresh salad greens, crispy pata, peruvian chicken, and kare-kare... they were all likewise tasty but those mentioned earlier stood out.
Cake - the sansrival was very good with its icing amply covered with ground cashew nuts. This went well with their ginger lily- lemon grass tea. Perfect combination.
Food servers - very attentive and accomodating.
Restroom - clean with a separate area for washing your hands. There was a quaint mirror off to one side where you can check yourself out after eating black paella - hehehe.
Overall, I had a good experience ... it’s like having home-cooked dinner at someone else’s cozy home
Beautiful place (if you like rustic or old house feel), outstanding food, and probably the best sangria I’ve had anywhere. The bagnet sliders are amazing - nicely seasoned, crunchy where it counts, and soft everywhere else. Make sure you have room for dessert!
We had our civil wed here and i love the set up/styling they made for our ceremony & guests tables. They've been very responsive in all our queries, flexible in our requests & very accomodating during the event. I appreciate how they care for the bride & groom during the event (serving us food, refilling our waters & someone is always there to attend to our needs). Our guests love the food too and their sangria is the best! The resto has a homey feel too so i highly recommend it!

the place is really nice with its perfect ambience, cozy and quiet.the food taste good with reasonable price. your seafood paella is a must to order. actually this is our 2nd visit with my family because I requested my daughters to celebrate my birthday here [650427391718134:Mateo's Restaurant Cafe].the staff gave us good service, too.
Food was great especially the black ink paella. A very nice place to have a family dinner...cozy, quiet and serene. The staff is very accommodating.
We celebrated my daughter's 7th birthday here yesterday. Mateos has a very good ambiance and the price is just right. Delicious Spanish-Filipino foods are served here at a very affordable and reasonable price. I like the feel of this place, its like eating at home. Will definetly come back again.

This place is simply awesome in all levels; from food to service, and everything else!
...nice place, good food! sayang malayo sa place namin..
It was a nice place po! i love the food and the iced tea omg thats my fave
I love everything about Mateo's! The quality of food, service, and the ambience! Highly recommended!
One of the few places that I can recommend. Place is a bit small but it is cozy and nice. Food is great. Order appetizers cause wait time is a bit long but it is worth the wait. I'd like to try their paella but I can't wait 45mins for it. Any way for it to be prepared earlier?
Nice place, quality food with an affordable price. Friendly, easy to get the attention of their staffs if u need something
Went here on a Sunday lunch with surprisingly few people. Ambiance is very relaxing. Service is good. Really loved their seafood paella and callos, probably one of the best in the metro. Was happy Beronia was also available in their wine list. Other food worth ordering (although not Spanish) is their Bagnet Pinakbet and Bicol Express. Will come back here if I'm in the area.
Best Valentine’s dinner my husband and I had in years! The fillet mignon was cooked just right. And the homemade lemon ice cream is to die for! We’ll definitely come back for more!
What we ordered:
Spanish salpicao
Mateo's Garden Salad
Callos a la Matteo's
Lengua in Mushroom Sauce
Paella Negra
Sansrival
Tablea Chocolate Cake
What we liked:
This Spanish restaurant at the back of Robinson's Magnolia which once stood as an ancestral house has the perfect ambiance for an elegant Spanish-themed meal. Among all we ordered, the paella negra was such a treat as it boasts of premium seafood toppings. Goes well with the tasty callos and lengua.
Went here this afternoon and I could say that the food was great! I was expecting less quality to be honest but I was surprised.
The only downside to this place that made me give a rating of 4 stars is the outside - mosquitos are flying everywhere because of the plants (no zapper was there unlike the inside) and the lack of staff.
I had dinner here with my friend last Monday, and I will definitely go back!
Food was okay, Im not really a fan of Paella, but for the first time I really enjoyed Mateo’s Vegetable Paella, it was so good and the rice was not mushy! As for the Kare-Kare, it may seem bland but their alamang pairs with it well. Their Sangria is a must-try! We had the Mateo’s Red Wine Sangria (Carafe size) and it was sweet and fruity, I ended up picking the apple bits! As for dessert, we had the Chocolate Table Cake, the cake was a bit dry but the flavor is there, it was not too sweet and the peanuty-yema on top blended perfectly with the chocolate cake.
As for the location and ambiance, if I could rate 10 stars , I would! Lol the place is really beautiful, perfect for dates and chikahan moments.
Another thing, the owner was there when we had our dinner, she’s a sweetheart! She explained the menu and shared some family stories, plus she’s really beautiful!
The food was affordable, but I remember it being better the first few times before. The sangria's were too strong for my taste. But ambience and staff was perfect as always.
A gem hidden in New Manila, this place have great dishes and dining experience with the ambiance of a your home’s dining area.
Best sellers are as follows: Spaghetti Caprese Linguine, Lengua Estofado, Rib Eye Steak, Roast Beef and their Paella. We also tried their Calamares Fritos which is perfect for appetizers served with their special dip.
We've eaten lunch here for a birthday celebration.
The place is quite small so I suggest you book a seat before going there. Main transpo to be used is car.
I ordered the seared salmon with paella negra and it didn't disappoint. Salmon is perfectly cooked and paella is creamy. Love the contrast of mangoes as well.

This deserves a 5 star! It’s one of those restaurants that has a very homey and nice ambiance and also serves excellent food!
Their Seafood Paella tastes so good and it’s more than enough for 2 people. One of the best paellas in the metro. (Tip: Squeeze some lemon into it.)
The mushroom soup is really tasty. The pumpkin soup has cinnamon powder on top so it’s an acquired taste but I like it because it gives the soup a little kick into it.
The cakes! Where do I start? The Lemon Cake is their bestseller. It’s very fluffy, not too sweet and doesn’t taste sour at all. Next, the Mango Yema Torte is the bomb! Super highly recommended.
As for the service, superb! They are very service oriented, very alert and very fast. Kudos to them! :)
It’s our first time here. We loved the place and their food! A must try! Will definitely come back. 👍🏼 servers are polite and friendly. I love the roast beef, and mushroom fettuccine!
Food 5; Ambience 4; price 5; service 4. It was a quiet sunday night but place was full. I loved my lengua estofado, prawns and scallops, sisig pasta, osso buco and safton risotto. The only thing I did not enjoy was the mocha sansrival which I found a bit bitter. But I am sure that’s supplied by a third party. We also enjoyed the onion soup and wild mushroom soup. The place is an old house turned restaurant so its old but homey, but it’s also part of the charm and appeal. Price is very reasonable and for a picky eater like me, servings are quite generous. My only advice, stick to red sauces for meats to enjoy rich taste. I had lengua in mushroom sauce before, but I loved the estofado better.
5stars! We ordered paella negra, salpicao, gambas, french onion soup. The paella is super yummy. A bit pricey though. This place is for date nights based on ambience and price point. Order the paella negra :)

PLACE - 5.0
The place is located at New Manila, a few minutes away from Gilmore Station. The restaurant itself looked like an old house renovated to be a restaurant. The dimmed lights added to the romantic feeling which is perfect for having an intimate dinner.
PEOPLE - 5.0
The staff were all amazing! They were friendly and knowledgeable. When asked about the different dishes, we were given detailed explanation about the specific dish. They even suggested on ways we can save! Service was quite fast because there were only a handful of costumers at that time.
FOOD - 5.0
1. Crablets
The amount of crablets were plenty in one order. They were crispy and tasty. It wasn’t too salt and too oily either. It was also served with garlic drenched in vinegar to balance the taste. A perfect appetizer! Something to munch on while you wait for your paella
2. French Onion Soup
You’ll definitely know that the soup’s freshly cooked because it was served hot! The onions were perfectly caramelized. The baguette slice drenched in the soup was super cheesy! It was a perfect match! The right balance of the sweet taste of the onion, the meaty flavor of the broth, and the saltiness of the cheese.
3. Seafood Paella
Paella is one of my most loved Spanish- Filipino dishes. I would have to say that this is one of the most delicious Paella that I have tasted. They were generous with the amount of seafood (shrimp, tahong, and clams) and other toppings. The quality of the rice was exquisite and was cooked to perfection!
NOTE: Good for 3 people! The amount can be considered as a meal itself. Also, this meal needs to be ordered in advance because it takes 30 minutes to prepare.
4. Honey Lemon Chicken
This dish complements the paella very well! The chicken is very tender and tasty. Sweet and savory at the same time. It was also served with a side salad and some fish sauce.
5. Sangria
The sangria is available to order in a glass or in carafe. It’s both sweet and strong at the same time. It contained lots of fruits that balances out the taste of the alcohol.
EATCREDIBLE tip: they accept reservations so it'll be best if you call in a head.
Do we recommend? Yes! We definitely do especially on romantic dinners or ever family dinners. It is also a good place to taste authentic Spanish- Filipino dishes! Will definitely come for more Paella! 😊

Been here a couple of times and service was always excellent. It's usually the service that gets better ratings in my reviews. Beef salpicao was tender and flavorful in all occasions. The vegetable paella was filling and rice was well done. Mushroom pasta was great, with just enough truffle oil. Dessert is good too. Red sangria is lovely but the white sangria was too sweet. However, it's quite pricey for the serving size.
We celebrated a birthday celebration at Mateo’s.
Table reservation was seamless. Ms Jessa was very accommodating. Food was superb and the service staff was courteous and very attentive.
Love the ambiance as well. Will recommend this resto and will definitely be back.
Was just a little disappointed since they ran out of churros. 😔
Food to recommend: paella negra, bagnet sisig, quesadillas, calamares
Ive always wanted to try this place and i am so happy i finally did. Its a house turned restaurant and has a semi private area. Homey ambience with awesome Spanish-Filipino food. The waiters are friendly and the restrooms are clean. Mateo’s garden salad plus Callos plus classic Sangria equals Happy Tummy! The sisig and honey-glazed chicken is good too. Place worth visiting with family or with friends or with someone special.
The resto has a very cozy ambiance. The waiters are attentive with our needs. I like the lengua and the mateo's salad the most. The price is a bit high compared to others and the serving sizes are also small (not for big groups) so you have to order more (my best guess is to other 1 viand per person if your hungry).
This place is great! Excellent dating spot! Feels like home. Friendly and attentive staff. Good food selection. Must try: callos, ossobuco and salpicao!
We visited Mateo's to celebrate Father's Day and luckily when we came, we're the only customers they're serving - well, we came a bit early for dinner so we have the place all to ourselves. The place is one of the old house turned restaurant and all the food they serve is Spanish inspired cuisine and the place was really preserved. The interiors gave that homey feeling.
Here's what we ordered:
🍴 Pumpkin Soup - split into 2 since we have a baby with us. The soup was flavored with cinnamon which was gave the dish a new taste and it was REALLY GOOD. The consistency of the soup was good as well and was served really hot!
🍴 Mateo's Salad - served with Lolarossa (which is a cherry tomato actually), mixed greens, peaches, feta cheese and tortillas on top with raspberry vinaigrette sauce. I personally loved this dish. The combination of tastes did not disappoint. The homemade raspberry vinaigrette tasted good with all the ingridients of the salad. This one is a must try!
🍴 Beef Morcon - the meat was cooked till it melts in your mouth. Serving was big and can be shared by two.
🍴 Beef Salpicao - the beef was a bit hard to slice and chew but tasted well. The sauce was a bit bitin but still a must try when you dine here.
🍴 Mango Yema Cake - i love the combination of Mango and Yema with walnuts and almonds. The yema was overpowered by the taste of mango so you won't feel any umay in the end.
🍴 Caramel Chocolate Cake - MUST TRY! Baby loved it. Super sweet nakaka-diabetes!
Pricey but the service was good, food is very satisfying.
Had Sunday lunch at Mateo's. The place is a house converted into a restaurant. That being said, it's a bit dark to our liking. Servers were attentive and polite. We had the Paella Negra, Seafood Paella, Beef Morcon, Ossobuco with Safron Risotto, Blue Marlin, Lengua, Sisig, Calamari, Garden Salad, and Salpicao. The Paella tasted good but the seafood ingredients were not enough and topped only on the Paella. It should be mixed into it. The Paella comes out as expensive for it's serving size. The Ossobuco and Beef Morcon were very flavorful. The Beef Morcon should be served with rice. (They removed rice servings on some items.) These 2 orders were priced a little on the above average. Calamari was cooked tender but on the salty side. Serving was small. The cakes were ok and the coffee was very good. Bread and butter should be free, not PHP70.00; especially with the pricing of the other items. Some hits and misses with Mateo's. All in all a good meal.
Went to this resto for my birthday because it's known to be a romantic and cozy place. The place is indeed very nice especially in the evening. Was very excited to order the seafood paella because of the reviews. The serving was really big but I was not happy with the taste. Found it too bland. Salpicao was fine. Still yet to find a dish that would make me go back.
Food is delicious, servings are a bit small (not family-style) so take note when ordering for a big group. I like the ambience, it's converted from a house with romantic lights and decors, perfect for a cozy romantic dinner date or cozy group meal. Make reservations beforehand, dining area is limited.
We ordered paella - order was served quickly but serving size small, our particular order wasn't cooked evenly (lots of tutong/toasted overcooked rice). Vegetables in kare kare was too hard to chew. Other orders were good - we ordered blue marlin, salmon, pasta, lengua, osso buco, all servings good for 1.
This restaurant is near Robinson's Place Magnolia. Nice place. Delicious food but small serving size.

4.5 for the place in general
4.5 for the staff
3.5 for the food
I love the ambiance of the place, feels so homey and staff are very hospitable too. We got their pitcher of sangria, after a glass I could feel it in my system already. Two thumbs up for their lengua and sizzling sisig 👍🏼
I like the feel of this place. It is more for dates but I took my mom here and we loved the paella, the pumpkin soup, and the lengua. They have servings good for 2-3 and their desserts are also good.
It's a very small, cozy place so if it's full, it can get quite loud, as was the case in our visit. We tried their spinach quesadilla, their kare kare, and their lemon olive oil cake. Everything was pretty good, though nothing really stood out in particular. The quesadilla was fine, it wasn't anything outside of what you'd expect. The kare kare was good, though it's strictly good for 1-2 rather than the 2-3 that's stated on the menu. The sauce was a bit thin though, and could use with a bit more flavor. The cake was good, though it could have a bit more lemon in it. Overall, there are many other interesting dishes to try here, so it's worth a repeat visit.
An intimate place to get good gourmet food which is rare actually in the area where a lot of chinese restos and filipino bars. The food is good and the place very nice. I dropped by for quick meal only and so i hope to stay longer next time and try out the other food.
Looking for a place to have an intimate dining experience with your love ones? Try Mateo's. ❤
Homey ambience and good food combined. 💕
Recently celebrated my Post 27th Birthday and I love their food. Please be sure to make reservations as place can be crowded + parking space can be difficult.
Winner ang Sisig at Lenggua. Nice place too if gusto mo tahimik lang, too bad walang Churros nung pumunta kami. Def will be back para naman sa Paella 👍👍
Definitely a hidden gem in New Manila! I'm glad we celebrated our 2nd year anniversary here. The place is so romantic and the food was delicious. Their tablea chocolate cake was the bomb! My boyfriend is not a fan of sweets but he loved it! 😋 thank you Mateos for a perfect night! 😊👌🏻
I've seen Mateo's for quite some time because my son goes to Lyric for violin lessons every weekend. Today, I decided to celebrate his 10th birthday in this quaint restaurant with a couple of closest friends.
First, the good stuff – we had a feast! We ordered the following:
• Spinach & Mushroom Quesadillas
• Wild Mushroom Soup (intense mushroom flavour; my son really liked this)
• French Onion Soup
• Gambas al Ajillo
• Mateo's Garden Salad (I love the shredded tortilla crisps! more feta cheese, please!)
• Sisig Pasta (this was my son's choice; my friend got some from his plate and she said this pasta dish is superb)
• Callos a la Mateo's (my friend had to ask some rice from her husband's tapa dish, saying that the Callos is better with rice instead of just bread)
• Tapa de Gracia
• Spanish Seafood Paella (so so so so soooo delish!!!!! I ate too much of this!)
• Tablea Chocolate Cake and Caramel Chocolate Cake (both cakes were fantastic but should be shared because of the sweet, rich flavour)
• Mango Shake
• Cappuccino (topped with cinnamon which I liked, and no need to add sugar but that's just me)
Food was superb. All of it. We were all very happy. My son already asked me when we can eat here again!
The reason why I'm not giving this restaurant a perfect score is because of some sablay with their service:
1. The A/C was leaking and water was dropping on the floor as well as on the table. I asked if we can move to the other table, but the server decided to just move our tables… which resulted to…
2. …the tables shaking. Although he put 'kalso' to balance the tables, every time my son moved, the tables would shake again. Minus points.
3. Their WiFi was not working.
4. They did not issue an official receipt upon paying the bill.
Will definitely come back because of the good food (still need to try their churros, risotto, seafood linguini, oysters… okay basically everything a pescetarian can consume here!). The issues I had here are all easily fixable (and forgivable).
It was my first time to be here. I love the ambiance of the place. Their Paella Negra and Beef Salpicao are very good! I recommend this place for family, friends or couples who like a quiet place to just talk and relax. I will definitely come back and recommend this place to my friends
Seafood paella and callos are both superb! Oysters were good too. This resto is a gem and better than a lot of the more high end spanish restos. Parking can be a problem though.
2nd we're here but this time with Tino and Ianna. Food doesn't disappoint. The Paella and Salpicao are excellent. The kare2 and sisig pasta are a must try.
Everything is great but there are a lot of mosquitoes..
Order their best seller which is Seafood Paella and Beef Salpicao. And if you're going there for dinner, tell them you will also order churros but to serve later.. Their churros is great and they only have limited churros per day, so they can reserve an order of churros for you or tell you right away that their churros is not available, just a heads up about their churros..
The foods here are so pricey but i really enjoyed the range of their menu. It really satisfied my tastebuds. I loved their lengua, the mashed potatoes really blend well with the lengua. And you must try their aglio olio pasta, it's a but spicy but your tongue will crave for the spicyness of the spaghetti, the brocolli is perfect in it. I love this restaurant
We celebrated my mom's birthday here. What can I say cozy feel, very nice staff and good food. I soooo love the paella and salpicao ;) The Mateo's green salad is refreshing ;) I would like to say thank you to Albert, Omar and the the staff for their hospitality ;)
🍛Baked Oyster - I was expecting really more. Nothing special for me. 😐
🍛Pan Grilled Salmon in Black Risotto - Salmon is good for me. I like risotto rice so I was curious to try this Black Risotto Rice! It taste good especially if you eat it with the Mango Salsa! 😊
🍛Spanish Salpicao - Average for me 😐
🍛They have a lot of selections so I don't mind returning actually. I want to try Paella, Wild Mushroom Soup, and their Pasta! 😊
🍛Ambiance - I feel like I'm inside a vintage house. I like the designs of the plates, very classic. 😊
🍛Staffs are very attentive! I think we met the owner, she's very friendly 😊
We tried the calamari which was okay, but i loved the dip that it came with. It was like a ketchup-mayo-tartar sauce combo with pickles. For our mains, we ordered the sardine pasta. The pasta was cooked al dente, tossed with garlic, capers and olives topped with spanish sardines. The sweetness of the capers and the olives came through and brought the flavors together. For our main we got the osso bucco saffron risotto. The osso bucco was okay, nothing really special about it. However, you canreally taste the saffron in the risotto which I liked.
Overall the food and the ambiance is nice and relaxing. The food was good and came all at the same time. The only negative thing I could think of here is that the food wasn't served hot.
For my sister's graduation, we decided to eat at Mateo's Restaurant Cafe. I found it through Patty Laurel's Instagram (@pattylaurel) and thought that it would be the perfect venue to celebrate with the family. We had dinner there one Friday night. From the photos I've seen, it's more beautiful when the sun is out because it gives everything an extra glow. At night, it has a romantic vibe, so it's perfect for dates as well.
I love everything about Mateo's! Makes me feel like its one of those gems that would give me an "escape" to my fast pace sched. Difference is that, I dont have to go far from the city to experience it. I love all the food we ordered especially the Seafood Paella and Mango Torte - the best!
Had a client meeting in Mateo's earlier and it's one of the best places in Manila to hold an intimate/closed group gathering. How about spend some quality time here with family and friends while reminiscing the good old times? ☺ They have a place which can accommodate 30-35 pax. The ambience will take you to the time when our grandparents were telling stories about their childhood. 😊 The place is quaint, homey and comfy! I just had their moist choco caramel cake and lemongrass iced tea for my afternoon snack. The cake isn't too sweet which is good for me while the lemongrass iced tea is indeed refreshing. It goes well with the cake. So if you're sick of going to the usual mall restaurants, you better try Mateo's.
Celebrated a special event today here in Mateo's. At 1st it was like beside a carwash I was immediately having a bad feeling. But once we entered the resto it has that homey feeling that you would like to dine with your family.
The food was superb specially the paella. It was full of flavors that you would want to ask for more. The mateo' salad raspberry vinegrette was delicious. The lengua was also good. Another fave of mine was the seafood pasta. The Kare-kare for me was nothing special.
Overall another great food find hidden in metro. 😆👍

I learned about Mateo's from an online list of top Filipino restaurant. It is located across Robinsons Magnolia. The place looked like a house that turned restaurant. It has a homey feel and its interiors are very classic, and instagrammable. The entire restaurant can sit about 40 people.
It is a Filipino-Spanish restaurant that serves good home-cooked meals. Dishes are cooked only upon order. Paella takes 30 minutes to cook and it is recommended to have reservation or advance order.
Notable dishes are Seafood Paella, Lengua with Mashed Potatoes (the mashed potatoes are good too), Beef Salpicao, and Sisig. Most main dishes come with rice. Desserts are sweet yet satisfying.
Never i miss to have my Mateos garden salad it has more white cheese or kesong puti with crispy tortillas chips and peach melba as my entree. I like it. their Spanish salpicao and blue marlin with lemon butter sauce are my top choice. Price is reasonable and the service is fine.
Food is good.. ambience is great! I was a fan of their binagoongan and aligue pasta in their old location.. too bad they don't have it anymore. But they improved their selections!
I just ate here last night and I must say the food was great. I've eaten in several restaurants in Europe and I must say the taste here is at par.
I has the salpicao and kare kare and was totally blown ayaw with it. Not only was it fresh but it also hit the spot!
I would definitely come back and I highly recommend people to try it.
I love the homey ambiance at Mateo's.
They got the friendliest servers and very attentive to your needs. They suggest for best sellers a all time favorites and must drinks and even walk you through on Mateo's food preps. ☺️
We ordered for Spinach and Mushroom Quesadillas for appetizer... The Seafood Paella is a must try (good for 6-8pax)! Brick Oven Margherita Pizza is very rich in cheese, tomato, basil and mushrooms perhaps the brick oven gives additional crunch to the crust! Both Lengua, and Salpicao melts in your mouth!!!
For dessert, we had Mango Yema Torte and Tablea Chocolate Cake... I personally like the Mango Torte! So yummy! 😋👌🏻
Reservation is a must since the place is relatively small and parking can be a bit an issue. Btw, they have a function room that can sit 16pax. No max limit or min order requirement! As long as you order, you're good! You can even have a sangria party!!! 😄
I would definitely go back at Mateo's!

If you are looking for a place to just have a good meal with the family, this is the perfect place to go! Near Robinson's Magnolia, the restaurant is a house turned cafe/resto. The food is home-cooked and their desserts are to die for! I especially loved their chocolate and caramel cake!
First time to eat here the food is great :)) specially bagnet sisig and paella and the price ia right... Definitely will come back to dine in again..
They're finally open again! We've always loved the food at Mateo's, but with their new menu, we love it even more. Must-try from their soft-opening menu are their brick oven pizzas and desserts.
I tried their thin crust Margherita Pizza. It had fresh tomatoes and basil leaves that gave the crusty pizza a very refreshing taste. Can't wait to try the other pizzas next time!
Their Chocolate Caramel Cake and Mini Chocolate Cupcake with Yema Icing are so sweet and rich in chocolate that it is a sinful indulgence you surely won't regret. Must-try their Tablea Chocolate Cake and Mango Yema Torte next time, which I heard are also their bestsellers.
Other must-tries: Lengua in Three Mushroom Cream Sauce, Mateo's Special Karekare, Spinach and Mushroom Quesadillas, and Sisig Pasta
Their new venue still has the same Spanish interiors, tiles, and blackboards from the previous one. It is just a little lackluster maybe because of the heavy gray adobe walls. I'm sure good lighting would be able to fix this. ? It can sit around 25 people in the main area, while the function room can accommodate around 12 people. They also have a veranda with a beautiful garden; great when the weather gets colder. ? Best of all, they now have parking for around 5 cars. Yey! ?
Will be back soon! ?
I remember my grandmother telling me stories about her grandmother preparing her some authentic Spanish dishes when she was young. We do have some Spanish lineage thus my grandmother experiencing some Spanish culture.
Unfortunately she was not able to pass down those recipes that was prepared to her when she was younger so I actually didn't know much about it.
Thankfully, I would be able to try some authentic Spanish food from Mateo's.
Mateo's is located just a couple of streets away from my house here in Quezon City.
Its a small quaint restaurant that has a very homey feel to it. It is quite small but has a warm feel to it that I am really at home to this restaurant.
Most of their restaurant specialties are based from recipes that were brought by the ancestor of one of the owners of the restaurant which is Mateo Del Castillo which the restaurant is also named after.
Trivia time!
Mateo Del Castillo is Sir Miko's (one of the owners of Mateo's) Great-grandfather. According to Sir Miko when his Lolo Mateo was young, he used to have restaurants and boarding houses in Batangas in which one day he sold all of his investments to support the HUKBALAHAP or Hukbong Laban Sa Hapon during the Japanese invasion here in the Philippines.
I really like that even though Mateo Del Castillo was not originally a Filipino, he has the heart of one because of how much he wanted freedom for our countrymen at that time.
Okay enough trivia time. Here are some of their specialties.
Senoritas. They are soft breads with some butter or margarine filling. They are really nice to have when its a little warm. This is great to have with coffee or hot tea.
Tortilla Espanola. Its the classic tortilla with some cheese and I think there was Spinach in this. It als comes with 2 dips that actually really make the tortilla taste so much better.
Creamy Spinach and Mushroom Quesadillas. Just like its name, it is really creamy and I love the texture because of the mushroom and the spinach.
Caesar's Salad Supreme. I like the presentation but I feel that the serving is quite small. I like a hearty serving of salad sometime but this tastes great.
Binagongang Bagnet. I was quite intrigued with this because honestly I don't eat binagoongan or bagoong to be exact. I don't like the fishy smell of it but this one doesn't have that and the way the bagnet was added made the dish really awesome!
Mateo's Special Kare Kare. I love Kare Kare and I think Mateo's is my 2nd most favorite. Of course the first would be my mom's version so I placed Mateo's in the second place. The peanut sauce isn't overwhelming although if you taste it there is really a difference on what grade of peanut they used to make this dish.
Paella Negra. It was my first time to see this so I was really excited to try it out. It contains seafood which I also like. Compared to the original kind, I think the Paella Negra does have a different taste because of the rice.
Mateo's Spanish Paella - this is I think one of the dishes that really represent Mateo's. Its fresh and very simple but a very hearty dish to share with friends and family.
Mateo's also serve pasta dishes like their Spaghetti Alla Vongole and Spaghetti Alla Puttanesca. I would suggest you guys try these because the taste is just extraordinary and its quite flavorful.
And if you loves sweets, Mateo's also have an in house selection of pastries and sweet breads for everyone to enjoy.
One of the best I can recommend is their Blueberry Cheesecake and their Mateo's classic ensaymada which are both made in their restaurant.
This is actually a really quaint restaurant. It's basically a house turned into a restaurant. The owners still live in the back attached to their family business. They serve Spanish food ranging from paella to lengua. It is quite pricy but the food is definitely worth the money. Also, the overall atmosphere of the restaurant is very homy and perfect for small parties with lose friends.
Joining the list of family houses turned into restaurants, this rustic and homey establishment can accommodate 20 people in its main dining room. Bigger groups of 30 – 50 pax, especially during special occasions or private events, may be accommodated in their function rooms. They also host fun and interactive activities during the weekends such as Gingerbread House Making, Crochet Workshop and Spanish Saturdays.

It was lunch time when B and I visited Mateo's Restaurant Cafe. Upon entering, we thought that it was just a very small place that can only accommodate around 15 people because there were only a few tables. Not until the waiter accompanied us to the other part of the Casa which can accommodate more people(30 more, I guess). We had this place all by ourselves! :) The waiter was very friendly and accommodating as he proactively took us on a tour to the other side of the restaurant. He even asked us if we wanted to have a photo taken at their veranda area. He also showed the function hall and mentioned that it can house 40 pax upon reservation.
The restaurant itself looked like an old Spanish bungalow house that was converted into a business, hence Mateo’s restaurant cafe. I loved how homey and cozy the ambiance is at Mateo’s. To add that we went there this Christmas season, reason for all the lovely Christmas decorations hanging on the walls and the small cute Christmas pieces on the tables.
We ordered “Mateo's Garden Salad” for our appetizer, which really boosted our appetites! It is a combination of fresh greens, of course, with candied walnuts, fresh grapes, parmesan cheese, on a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. Being sweet lovers, both B and I loved this first meal served to our table. ♥
I ordered “Mateo's Carne de Vaca” – which at first I thought will disappointment me because of how it was poorly plated. It didn’t look very inviting maybe because of its monotonous color, it was only all brownish red. But the world turned upside down when I tasted it. I loved how the garlic flavour perfectly complemented the tomato base where the tender and juicy beef meat was cooked.
Marvin Villamayor played it very safe because he ordered one of his favorite Spanish dishes, “Lengua Alla Mateo” – this Ox tongue served on an oh so creamy white sauce is also good. I only had a spoonful from B’s plate just so I can taste it :) For me, it is my average Lengua on cream because my parents (yes, both of them) used to cook this at home. So far, nothing beats my Lengua on white cream sauce made at home. Reason why it would be a challenge to impress me with this particular dish.
“Mateo's ensaymada con queso de bola” – another one of B’s favorite variants of bread. It was your usual Ensaymada with grated Edam cheese and some caramel glazed on top. It also oozed with a hint of cream cheese from inside as we took a bite. Both B and I agreed that it’s not the best ensaymada we've tasted but it’s okay. Nothing really special with the taste despite the try to make it different.
Mateo's Restaurant Cafe offers homemade with love Spanish-inspired Filipino cuisine that is really close to taste and hearts of every Filipino as part of our history and culture. It was newly opened last just June which is located in Diliman, Quezon City.
Mateo's is a nice place to chill, hangout and catch up with friends and family. It is also a perfect place to date. It's main dining area can accommodate up to 20 persons. Other than that, you can also have your meetings, bridal shower, christening and other events because Mateo's has their other function rooms that can do catering and can accommodate 30-50 persons.
As we're told by the owners specifically Miss Lala and Sir Miko, the restaurant was named after Lolo Mateo Del Castillo which happened to be Sir Miko's great-grandfather (if not mistaken) and also where their original recipes came from which was passed down from generation to generation. According to Sir Miko, Lolo Mateo used to put up restaurants and boarding houses in Batangas before but then sold all of his investments to fund the HUKBALAHAP (Hukbo Laban Sa Hapon). Ohhh history!
Mateo's is located at 76 Malakas street. I love how homey the place is! They have good lighting, fast wifi, and friendly servers. Their food is nothing short of amazing as well. They offer Spanish-inspired dishes at reasonable prices. A+ for their dishes' presentation. Must trys: the Spanish paella, quesadilla, kare kare, and the blueberry cheesecake. They also hold fun activities like gingerbread house decorating, but you have to contact them 2 days before.
Spanish delicacies were served along with different workshops.
I get to try the Gingerbread House Making, Crochet Workshop and Spanish 1 Workshop. I wish we had an ample time doing this along with good food on the side to maximize the lessons. :)
All in all, I really enjoyed the fun-filled events that we had at Mateo's. Though I got a situation with my quesadillas, this doesn't stop me from going back and trying other excellent food options on their menu. From the owners to the waiters, everyone made me feel like I'm home.
I just wish that their menu is more visual so people who are first-timers will not get daunted with all the spanish terms.
It may be near EDSA, but it won't stop me from dropping by at Mateo's and enjoy their Classic Mateo's ensaymada with Caramel Machiato on the side. :)
Along the confines of Quezon City lies a newly opened filial joint which will surely tickle your fancy and your gustatory senses. Also your other penchants and likes will be addressed here since they offer a wide array of lessons and creative outlets for you to savor and experience. Last Friday Night November 21, 2014 around 4pm we were privileged to be invited along with a couple of media bloggers and influential writers to experience first hand what Mateo's has to offer and we were definitely blown away by what they had in store for us!
Before we started the session, we were given first a brief background on their history. Lolo Mateo (Mateo del Castillo) is the great-grandparent of one of the partners who started this restaurant. He is a Spaniard, who moved to the Philippines with his mother and grew up in the Philippines. He put up restaurants and boarding houses in Batangas, which made him a rich businessman alongside the Laurels and Leviste in Batangas back then. However, he decided to sell his businesses to fund the HUKBALAHAP (Hukbo Laban sa Hapon). So, he gave up all of those to join the Filipinos and fight for our freedom. Mateo's Restaurant Cafe was put up in his honor. Some of the recipes are their family recipes which have been passed on and continued up to this date by his kin.
They actually offer a wide array of excellent Filipino-Spanish-inspired dishes to its guests. Mateo’s Restaurant Cafe stands out from the rest of the establishments on the street of Malakas since their dishes were very well made and carefully construed to create that certain "ambiance" that you would love going back to. I had their macchiato and I was also served some hot tea which came in with a lemon to add a tangy taste to it. Also sauteed mushrooms and some quesadilla were served as our appetizers while waiting. Me being an ultimate fan of mushrooms was brimming with excitement already since I loved eating mushrooms :) Yey!
We had our first activity which was to design your own ginger bread house and the most creative team gets to take home that house. Without too much frosting on our hands unlike the other groups we had to make do with what we had and just come up with the best design possible by brainstorming and squeezing out our creative juices. Too bad we did not win this contest thus we weren't able to bring home our masterpiece but we still had fun nonetheless.
Next we had their crochet lessons with Miss Rosee however due to the time constraints we had to cut the session short and she just taught us how to effectively make a cord protector for your chargers by employing the use of yarn. This is so awesome! :) Now my charger won't get lost anymore due to its trademark yarn cord protector! :) Yey!! :)
While we were willfully contemplating on completing our creatively designed cord protectors we were served our main dishes to devour in and taste. We had their Paella which is a must try! Their Binagoongan and their Kare Kare which I loved and finished to every bit! :) You should definitely order this one from their Menu :D You won't get disappointed.
We were also given some samples of their red velvet cupcakes which definitely catered to my sweet tooth and then to cap off our meal we were served with a slice of their ever so delectable blue berry cheese cake which came along with their signature ensaymada rolls which in my opinion could definitely be at par and can compete with Mary Grace's cheese rolls which is also one of my dessert staples and favorites! :D
This was definitely a great experience with all my favorite things to do, my favorite food and my favorite people all in one venue. I will surely come back again this time around with my family and friends.
I'm sure this restaurant will surely go a long way! :) Congratulations Mateo's Restaurant and Cafe!! :D
Amazing food and outstanding service. Their Paella negra is best matched with their Mateo's Special Kare-kare. Another MUST TRY from Mateo's is their Tortila Espanola. For dessert i strongly suggest their Dark Chocolate Mousse Dome and for merienda Mateo's Ensaymada con Queso and Senorita as well.
I live all the way from makati but i will definitely brave EDSA just to dine-in at Mateo's Restaurant Cafe again and again. Kudos to the owners and the chef!
