Whenever I think of karaage, this place always comes to mind. They also serve very good, affordable tonkatsu. The staff are really friendly, and the place is secluded if you prefer quiet eating.
Whenever we crave for pork tonkatsu, this is where we go. Their tonkatsu is great! I love mixing it with their tonkatsu sauce + yellow japanese mustard. It creates the same sensation when eating loads of wasabi. I got addicted to that feeling. The crew and the boss is very friendly. Besides, I don't need unlimited cabbage! :D
My favorite Tonaktsuya place. :) I live in the same building and they always save my Fridays. Other people go to far flung places for good food, well, I have them at our basement. No stress at all. Anyway, of course they are very good on their Tonkatsu. Fun fact, I think this is the only Jap resto that offers Hirekatsu. I always order Chicken Katsu set for just 220, it's really worth it. A must try for Jap food lovers. :)

Upon order, we were served with cold tea. The usual set would include miso soup plus in Tonkatsuya, there's a bean sprout side dish and a bowl of rice. First time I went there, I ordered Cheese Katsu Set at Php 260 because I was craving for something like Ichiro's in Taft. Funny thing is, their cheese katsu was regular tonkastu topped with melted cheese. Ichiro's was better of course that it melts in the mouth. But Tonkatsuya's wasn't bad either; it was acceptably good.
Yes it was that I visited again. Second time around, ordered Tonkatsu Set at Php 220. It wasn't as soft but it's tasty and not so oily. A good way to end it was their sliced cabbage (not unlimited, of course). Just had to pay additional for Japanese mayo or Kewpie sauce.
Both times, ended up full and happy.

Tonkatsuya never fails to satisfy my cravings for really good (and authentic!) tonkatsu. I always get the tonkatsu set, but my last visit I had the curry katsu set. The curry is really good it can be eaten on its own!

Tonkatsuya is at the left side basement of Palm Tower (condominium). It's a hidden Japanese restaurant, but worth finding. I honestly prefer non-mainstream restaurants like this in Makati including hole in the walls. Aside from cheap price, the food tastes more authentic as most of the owners / chefs are natives. I even caught the hands on Japanese owners there.
I got the Chicken Katsu Set for a cheap price of 220PHP. It composes of:
Chicken Katsu - Perfectly cooked! The meat was soft and not too oily. I could hardly finish it. Huge serving.
Veggies - Small serving of bean sprouts. More servings of shredded cabbage that was a bit dry.
Miso Soup - It was fine. I've tasted better miso soup than this.
Japanese Rice - It tasted authentic! It smelled good, right texture for chopsticks, and huge serving.
Iced Tea - This is not the ordinary powdered iced tea. It tasted like it was extracted from tea leaves but could've better if served hot.
I love the interior! The simple yet neat Japanese decorations gave me the oriental feel. There are interesting Japanese manga in the shelves which are actually for sale. You can check them out while waiting for the food.
The service was awesome! Food was served fast. The staff were saying Japanese greetings and bowing all the time, showing how trained they are.
No need to get out of the building to get excellent katsu for us. An elevator ride will suffice to get to the "2nd best katsu in Metro Manila" according to some bold blogger declaration. Of course, the best that they're referring to is Yabu. Never been there, and I never have to.
Up: Location, price, crowd (Japanese people frequent this joint in our building)
Down: Many of the customers are residents of the condo building, so many of them eat here wearing only boxers and sleeping clothes.
It's my second time to this place. This time I brought a friend with me so I can try more dishes 😊 Yes it's good so I had to come back. Last time I ordered the basic tonkatsu set. So this time I tried katsu cheese and it is equally good! Well everything with cheese is good, right? 😉 Then we ordered the yummy katsu curry. Food are served in big portions and with refillable oolong(?) tea. The place is small with simple interiors. When we went there, the place is full and incoming customers can no longer be accommodated - a good indication that food is good 😉

Tastes just as good as mainstream Tonkatsu places but for a lesser price. Almost all customers were Japanese, we actually felt we were the foreigners in the area. lol. I will definitely come back.
I read about this place from a foodie site and added this to my "to eat" list. Price is okay - cheap actually. A place where you can get a "hire tonkatsu set" for only 250 pesos! Tastewise, its actually okay.
