Expensive but super worth it!!! Love their sashimiii ❤
Ordered the tofu steak, marufuku futomaki and spicy tuna and spicy salmon. Good service and ambiance. It is quite expensive but fish is fresh
This place is amazing.
1. The ambiance would make you feel like you're actually in Japan. You would even catch yourself being surprised that you're in the heart of Ortigas once you step out of the place.
2. Sushi is yum! It's weird how sushi is basically raw fish amd seafood, but somehow the sushi here tastes so fresh. The spicy salmon sashimi is a must-try. 👍
3. BEST tofu steak I've ever had. The cut silken tofu wrapped in probably a thinly sliced beef belly, or maybe bacon (?) ,glazed with that sweet-savory sauce. Oh heaven. 🥰
You're definitely getting your money's worth. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
If you’re looking for an authentic Japanese Restaurant, Marufuku is the place to be! Ordered Scallops, Shake Sashimi, Gyunikudon, Kani Salad and Sushi Rolls. It’s one of the most expensive Japanese restaurants I’ve ever been to but every peso spent is worth it!
Best Japanese restaurant in the Ortigas area. If you live in Makati this is nothing of note to make the trip for, but if you live in the Ortigas/Manda/San Juan area this is the closest you will get to comfort Japanese food in the area that isn’t smothered with mayo and called Aburi-everything. Little Baguio has Tomo, QC has Oedo, Ortigas has Marufuku!
...from new "off the menu" finds to classic straight up menu "must haves", Marufuku never fails to impress! the service crew know their trade and will go above and beyond to make you feel at home. try their sushi rolls and sashimi platters, you can never go wrong!
Love Marufuku. Ordered Marufuku roll, tempura, salsmon sashimi, grilled saba mackerel, beef yakiniku, waygu sticks and chahan rice and everything were great! Been here several times and always yummy food, nice and great service! 👍🏻❤️
We had a couple of things, their spicy salmon salad, their soft shelled crab maki, their yaki onigiri, and their Sapporo ramen. Out of all those things I'd have to say the onigiri was my favorite. It's also the most reasonably priced item, at 180 for two big onigiris. The rice was nice and crunchy and toasted, with salmon on the inside. Definitely something I'm getting if I eat there again. Their other items were okay, but too highly priced for me. On average everything else we had was 500 pesos apiece, which is a lot, when you can get equivalent items for less in equally good restaurants. Their spicy salmon salad was pretty big, but a lot of that heft is still just cabbage. It's good, but it's 440 pesos, which is a lot. Their soft shelled crab roll was just so so to me, could use some more flavor. At 545 or so, it's pretty up there in price. Their ramen was the one I liked the least, as the broth was a bit too liquid and bland, it didn't have the heft and depth of flavor I'm looking for. It was also 500+ pesos, which is quite a lot for ramen which doesn't stand out.
All in all, there's quality service and good food here, it's just probably overpriced for what it is.
I love this place. Besides the Japanese restaurants you find in hotels, there are a few good & authentic Japanese restaurants out there...... and Marufuku is definitely one of the good ones.
It may be a bit pricey but you get what you pay for, and they serve good quality Japanese dishes so I can’t complain.
Marufuku is my go-to high tier Japanese restaurant. It's great in many ways and also has its fair share of problems.
The good thing is that there are some dishes which I get what I pay for. Examples of these are the different types of Ramen and a few rice bowls. The grilled mackerel's amazing too and the steak's flavorful as heck. The sushi's great too but the price may be too rough on the wallet.
The bad thing is that everything else on the menu may be very rough on the wallet, just like the sushi. Yes, I know that you're the only high tier Japanese restaurant in Ortigas but please do not take advantage of the customers' hunger and craving for good Japanese food and impose high prices on us.
I may be able to agree with your prices but sometimes, the food you serve may be inconsistent just like the unagidon I recently ate which had fewer slices and was a bit less fresh than the one I ate during my last, last visit.
The parfaits are great along with the shaven ice deserts with the dango. I'll pay any price for that. Dango is very rare in the Philippines and you are the only folks I know who serve them.
The service is average. It's not as bad as what the folks here say about waiters snobbing them. I think that they probably are tired and may have accidentally done so. It's not that good too since yes, waiters don't really respond that quickly to you and neither do they give you water if your glass is seen empty.
Therefore, I will give the restaurant a 4*. If only you didn't serve the high-class steaks, I could have given a 3*.
Was having a tough day so we decided to have one of my favorite cuisines - Japanese! Marufuku serves quality Japanese dishes but they are quite pricey. For starters we had the Spicy Salmon Salad (P440) and as you can see from the picture, they are generous with the salmon. We also had the Gyuniku Aspara Maki (P195) and Gyukushiyaki (P195) with the latter starting my wagyu cubes obsession (hee hee). We also had 5 Kinds Aburi Sushi (P250) which was okay, not too flavorful. To end our dinner we had the Coffee Jelly which was like afogato but with bits of coffee jelly 🎎
I’m a big fan of japanese food and whenever I crave, I always see myself here in Marufuku. The spicy tuna salad is to die for! And don’t forget to try the Mango Kakigori
I love their Spicy Salmon Sashimi and Marufuku roll. I find them really good. Though the place is small it’s a convenient location for me. I look forward to eating here again to explore more of their finely crafted dishes.
My friend and I wanted to try Japanese restos in Ortigas. She got curious with the Marufuku Roll so I reserved a seat for weekday lunch a day prior. Service was great throughout, and our meal was good too. A serving of Marufuku Roll is already good for 3. I just added Chicken Teriyaki, which was a bit unique because it's fried. The sauce had just the right amount of sweetness.
The reason for not giving a perfect score is pricing. Marufuku Roll is at 675 pesos while Chicken Teriyaki is at 355, served with veggies on the side. We just had their free service tea (hot and cold). The menu says it's already VAT-inclusive and exclusive of 5% service charge.
I've been to Marufuku a couple of times. Kinda expensive compared to other Japanese restos but since it's just a stone's throw away from where I live, I can't complain plus food and service have consistently been very good every time we visit this place. 👌 It's always packed with patrons even during weekends.
Not everybody's cup of tea but I really liked the strong earthy flavor of shitake drenched in lemon juice - if I could have red wine on my other hand :D
Chicken teriyaki was good and ordinary but they served it with my ideal plain rice - slightly sticky and fluffy.
Grilled shrimp - the family's favorite and standard order - served with veggies and capers, the shrimps were moist and tender grilled to perfection 👍👍
Ebi tempura - 5 prawns in light batter which I prefer👍👍
5 types of sashimi platter - fresh tuna, salmon and uni!!! Enuf said 👏👏
Grilled Pork Belly and Chicken Gizzard - ordinary yakitori
Grilled Salmon - crunchy salmon skin and soft meat. Even I hear my ears clapping on how simple the dish was and very tasty & fresh it was at the same time. 👍👍
Halo-Halo - stellar milky fine shaved ice - it's the bomb! 👍👍
Great Jap resto option in Ortigas!

Private dinner with four other guests, we ate a lot. One of the best japanese restaurants off of my must try list.
What you should order:
5 Shurui No Sashimi P770 - Salmon, Ika, Uni, Tuna, Shima Saba)
Marufuku Roll P675
Ebi Teppanyaki P595
Sushi rolls are the bomb. I can’t wait to let the rest of our family to try it. Will be back soon.
P.S. Forgot what to call the dessert we ordered which was delicious. Please ask whwn you visit and try it out.
I used to adore their SALMON SASHIMI which at the time I believe rivaled Nobu.
Their yakitori's are pretty good.
The food overall is a 4+ its just that the price/value puts the overall rating down. Since it was 2 years since I last visited I might have to check up on their quality and service if it has been maintained.
Plus points for a kaunta seki (counter seating) in front of the chef for a semi-authentic Japanese ambience.
Best choices for today . .. yummy! These are some of the items in MARUFUKU that certainly make your day .
EBI TEMPURA
SHAKE DON
HALO-HALO KAKIGORI
GINDARA SHABU
Tried their rainbow sushi. It wasn't that great for it's price. Although the ambience is really great because it's usually peaceful inside even though it's in the middle of Ortigas. I love the interior and how they present their food however I would like them to improve on their food and servicing skills. Would like to try it again soon.
I made a reservation through Zomato and it was quick and hassle free.
We came at around 6:30. We were immediately seated in our reserved table.
We ordered their 5 kinds sashimi, the spicy salmon sashimi and the Tarako sumiyaki udon. We also got a stick of their yakitori for our toddler. The size was bigher than the others that we have tried before and she seemed to enjoy it because she ate it all. The sashimi dishes were beautifully plated and were all fresh. Surprisingly, my favorite for the nighy was the Udon. It was also beautifully plated and nothing I have ever tried before. The noodles were packed with flavor and was topped with seafood - shrimps, squid, oysters and eel. Yum! I would have loved to try their tempura and rolls but we were already stuffed.
The restaurant size was modest. It was simple and clean. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. They offered a baby seat for our toddler and made a choptick for her to use. Food service was fast and we did not have yo ask for tea and water refill every time.
Pictured are tarako sumiyaki udon, the 7types of sashimi and the marufuku roll. All were brilliant. The sashimi was fresh, the rolls were tasty and the udon was especially generous with seafood toppings. I always enjoy Marufuku and would recommend it to anyone.
This is one of my favorite japanese resto in manila. I always order beef kamameshi here, some fish (gindara, mackarel or hamachi) and sashimi ofcourse. Visited marufuku couple of days ago and ordered ama ebi, i was kinda disappointed it was not fresh and had to spit it. It was the first time it happened to me. So i hope they would be mindful about serving fresh seafood next time. But over all, i like the food here. Btw, please bring a driver or take uber coming here, parking is really terrible.
Pricey, but worth it! Fave Japanese restaurant in the metro. Simple, yet direct to the point taste. Started with the Marufuku roll, ebi tempura, unagi, mango, cucumber and kani rolled w rice. Flavors complemented each other very well! Also had the 5 kinds aburi, the contrast of the fruit went well w the fish. Recommend as well! Don't forget to order the charcoal sumiyaki noodles, always a favorite!! charcoal noodles with assorted seafood. Really loving the clean yet distinct taste here! Ate for 2 people, spent around 2k. Will definitely go back again and try other things.
However, service is a bit lacking, seems like during the time we visited, there was only 1 server. Or also probably because we arrived 5pm, and they have a break for the afternoon, which then resumes at 5pm. Other staff probably have not arrived yet, just a guess.
Overall, good food and good ambience! Really loving it !
Ate there with a friend who loves eating at Marufuku. Resto has great service and amazing food! A bit pricey for some items, but definitely worth it.
Prepared to come back because of its authentic Japanese food! 👌🏼
I am in love with Japanese foods, and this restaurant helps me to stay in love. Their soba is a must try. The noodles itself is delicious! I love their oysters and how fresh their sashimi are. We ordered their special of the day which is a hamachi head. It was indeed yummy and they sure know how to grill it well. Our salmon soup were a little bit salty though, but our overall food orders were great!
Spicy tuna sashimi and ebi tempura in Marufuku Japanese Restaurant is ❤❤❤. Price is reasonable for the dishes since the seafood were fresh. Service was fast.
Second visit and it's still remarkable. Came here for lunch so me and my friend who studies Nihongo decided to order their Marufuku roll (quite expensive but all worth it for its huge serving), 7 kinds sashimi (salmon sashimi is the best! literally melts in your mouth like butter), and Sashimi salad which was off the menu. Ambience is very relaxing. Price is justified by the servings. Overall, Marufuku remains one of my top choices when picking out an authentic Japanese restaurant to dine in.
Marafuku has been on my foodie bucket list for sometime, and I am glad that I finally ate there. Not only were my expectations gone beyond what I had expected, my love for Japanese cuisine went up by 10 fold, if at all possible. I love Japanese food so much!!!
I love places that feel like a neighborhood restaurant. Despite the buildings and high-rises of the concrete of Ortigas, Marafuku transfers you into another world, like the old traditional Japanese era. It may also be hard to find, I admit I did get lost for a few minutes, but when I did find it, it felt like I found a hidden treasure that I have been searching for.
As I made my way to the door, I thought that I would sit at the sushi bar , if they had that option, as I was a solo diner for the evening. When I entered, I was surprised that there were more bar seats to pick from than just the sushi bar. There was an area located right in front of the grill and another area in front of the nice selection of Japanese liquors—from sake to malts. I don’t drink (it’s really once in a blue moon), but I did opt to sit right in front of the liquors as they looks inviting and intriguing with some Japanese writing and all.
The menu was a bit extensive. If I could’ve ordered everything, I would’ve! Lol! After some debating to myself for several minutes, I decided to have a few pieces of sushi, as well as some grilled skewers. And what I ordered was by piece or stick and not the usual 2 to an order. Single option for food is best. With that said, I ended up ordering: 1 uni/sea urchin sushi, 1 shake/salmon sushi, 1 ikura/salmon roe sushi, 2 skewers of chicken wings/tebasaki, 2 skewers of pork belly/butabara, 1 skewer of wagyu beef, and a cup of Gohan rice.
For the sushi, it tasted really fresh. They were just wows in my mouth. Foodgasm baby! Fresh, clean, robust, seafood ocean flavor. Sushi is supposed to be one biters, but I wanted those single bites to last forever. The shake wasn’t at all fishy. The uni was super creamy. As for the ikura, I love them popping in my mouth, like little seafood pearls bursting with wonderful saltiness.
The skewers at Marafuku are a different than other Japanese restaurants. Instead of it being Yakiniku—grilled just on a hot grill, Marafuku has Robatayaki—grilled on charcoal. When food is grilled on charcoal, it gives them a nice depth of flavor. The skewers here were just again, wows. The chicken wings slid off the sticks easily, bones clean off in a single bite. The pork belly was so amazing, probably the best I have had ever, and I have had a lot of liempos in my life. As for the Wagyu… beef heaven! Need I say more?! Next time, I will order more of it. Lol! Seriously delicious. Just a note for the Wagyu: eat it while it’s still hot off the grill. I usually save best bite for last, and the last bite of Wagyu wasn’t as enjoyable as the first 2 when I got my food.
Food: 5.0 – Excellent food! The best I have had by far.
Price: 5.0 – The prices may seem pricey, but I think that it’s totally worth every peso. Everything has gone past my usual par.
Service: 5.0 – Very attentive staff and fast service. As a PWD, they were concerned I couldn’t get up on the bar seats at it was higher that the average chair. I assured them I could, but someone was close by when I got on and off the chair, just making sure and being safe.
Ambience: 5.0 – The old era feel of Japan is great. The place is quaint and cozy as any neighborhood restaurant should be. Even during the busy dinner hour it really doesn’t feel busy or stressed. Dining here it totally on a relax chill vibe.
Anyone that loves Japanese food of any sort should really visit Marafuku. It is a MUST! As for me, I MUST come back soon and try the Chutoro/Fatty Tuna Sashimi. :)
I picked this place last night for my birthday dinner celebration considering the location, a bit secluded, not too crowded or loud, and it's right beside the hotel I was staying at. I normally read the restaurant reviews first before deciding whether I should try it or not and so far, it exceeded my expectations. From California maki, to their grilled skewer appetizers, the wagyu beef was fantastic by the way, to their yummy rice bowls and of course, wouldn't be complete without tiger prawn tempura. Service was great and really quick. I'll definitely come back here again when I'm in the area, but I'd probably going to pass up sake hahaha.
Service is excellent, the servers were courteous and friendly. Good recommendations on what to order
Food was great, fresh, and portions are reasonable
Awesome place with great interiors and service. The place is not too big, perfect for a cozy feel. Service is very prompt as well as the food preparation. The free appetizer black seaweed is very good!
We tried the marufuku roll (wrappd tempura prawn with unagi on top), gindara uni and tofu steak. All were very wrll presented and perfectly prepared. Sarap!!
Chicken teriyaki was wierd though because they fried the chicken and put teriyaki sauce on top instead of the grilled teriyaki chicken we are used to.
Definitely high level of everything here at marufuku.
Now my go to japanese rest in ortigas. Good food! Loved their oysters scallops and gindara in uni and miso sauce..the tantanmen isnt bad either-if you can handle spicy.
Went back here and I am very very pleased. I ordered a butadon and a torched oyster. How I love the experience here. The servers are all attentive to my need and polite. Needless to say the overall experience is great. How I wish the prices are more affordable so others may try this. Nice one Marufuku.
Came here for dinner after watching a play and had a nice Jap treat. My faves that night were the seaweed salad and tofu steak. The vinaigrette dressing was just of the right sweet and sour combo. The tofu steak sauce was a bit on the salty side but the fresh soft tofu balanced it well. The beef that wrapped the tofu was bacon-good too. If you love salmon, they serve it fresh and cooked right. We also had their eel maki/sushi and chicken skewers those were good too. It was a real authentic Japanese explosion in the mouth.
It's a bit pricey but definitely worth it.
We went to this Japanese Resto and I must say that we did enjoy all the food we ate. The nice place, the smelly yummy food, the accommodating people and chefs, It was all worth choosing the resto for Japanese food experience.
I am a sucker for Cold Green Tea Noodles (Cha Soba) and Ebi Tempura. This place serves the best of the two dishes I've tasted so far. The tempura remains to be crispy even after it is dipped in the sauce. The shrimp to batter ratio is just perfect. And the Cha Soba was just to die for. To cap it off, try the green tea shaved ice dessert. One of the best!
One of the best Japanese restos in the metro. Makes us feel like we've been transported to Japan the moment we step inside! Must try the yakiniku and their chicken wings. Will be back for sure!!
-Queing, good.
- Service, awesome.
- Food, awesome.
- Ambiance, good.
Food ordered:
- Miso Soup, great.
- Mixed tempura veggie, awesome.
- Fresh Salmon plater, good.
- Beef fried rice, awesome.
Authentic Japanese food. Not for your everyday lunch break though, their food are too expensive. My fav on their menu: tempura, chicken teriyaki and sukiyaki.

Somehow this secret Japan isn't so secret anymore. The real Japanese love to eat in this quiet hideaway in Ortigas.
My hubby loves to walk to Marufuku from his office in Tektite. I didn't mind walking to it myself as I know I'll be rewarded with awesome Jap food. My eldest daughter says it's her favorite Jap restaurant!
Just be ready to smell like a restaurant when you get out. It's always a crowded place. What with regular goers and newbies who've discovered great food.
a lil bit expensive especially their huge oysters which costs Php650 per piece. I love their grilled gindara in uni something, haha! Salmon and uni sashimi are fresh. Good food👍🏻
Quality Japanese dishes in a quiet location in Ortigas. It serves even Wagyu and fine oysters. If it wasn't as pricey this easily can be my Japanese home. My friend and I got to dip our tongues to 5 kinds.

Marufuku is a hidden gem tucked in the heart of the Ortigas CBD. It's located along San Miguel Avenue but parking here can be quite a chore. You have to come earlier than service for a decent parking slot. More than the parking, let's talk about the food.
The food here is really good. I wouldn't really call it my value for money Japanese resto but taste wise, they can compete. Try their signature Ohba sushi-- torched salmon and uni, spicy tuna nigiri style on a mint leaf. Oh wait, don't forget the caviar. As if the Uni and Salmon was not enough, they topped it with caviar! Every mouthful was a delight. You'll probably say that it's one of the best things you've ever put in your mouth. Also try other noteworthy dishes like the Wagyu tongue skewers and beef skewers. Do try the crispy pork nape, although i find this a tad salty. The pork nape tastes like crispy chicharon so get it if your into that kind of thing. Something to try on your next business lunch.
Be instantly transported to Japan the moment you step foot in this restaurant. Marufuku is a hidden gem in Ortigas near the University of Asia and the Pacific and serves insatiable Japanese food. It has a wide range of food options in their menu which can satisfy the guests taste buds. They have a variety of appetizers, ramens, sushi, yakitori, katsus and more. Their best seller is the Kaki Motoyaki- succulent Hiroshima oysters baked with a miso mayonnase on top. Their Uni sashimi is very sweet and fresh. While their ramen serving, more specifically their Sukiyaki Udon, is quite big good for sharing. They also offer premium sakes to cap of an authentic meal.
Service is really good and pricing is affordable. Expect that most of their guests are students and professors from the university as well as office employees from the nearby buildings.
This Japanese restaurant quietly tucked in the Pearl drive of Ortigas is a must-visit!! I have only high praise for everything I have ever tried here, and that is not an exaggeration. Highly recommending their Marufuku Yaki Onigiri, salmon roe and unagi nigiri, and seafood roll--and enjoy a heavenly meal. ❤️👌🏽

Excellent Japanese food. Good service. Tenperature is great. Interiors are great.
Most importantly food is really the star here. Ramen is also very good but it's worth noting the sushis and yakitoris are so great.
An authentic Japanese restaurant in a not so easy to find spot in ortigas. We love the freshness of their salmon and maguro.. The gioza and the gindara as well. Most in the menu is actually good. The staffs are friendly and attentive to your needs.
Two words - pleasant surprise.
We ordered wagyu, beef tofu steak, ebi tempura, chahan, uzura (quail wrapped in bacon), coffee jelly, and also sampled a bottle of Sake. Food came relatively fast, everything tasted awesome!
My downside to the entire dining experience is that as we were seated by the "bar", I did notice small bugs that resembled... Well... Baby cockroaches. Might be time to fumigate the place.
We went as a family and there were 6 in our party, so we ordered at least 12 different dishes. The salmon sashimi is of a high quality grade in terms of freshness. Their signature sushi rolls, chicken teriyaki and black sesame ice cream are the noteworthy dishes, but everything was good. The place may look small but the resto has private rooms tucked inside and the place is always full.
Marufuku is currently my favourite go to for salmon sashimi ... i firmly believe that Japanese restos should serve nothing but Fresh melt in your mouth high grade sashimi and i can confidently say that all my visits here proved that they know what their business is ... dandan noodle is one of my must haves here, the spicy salmon salad is ♥♥♥♥♥ Freshest Hamachi Head ive had here in Manila too ... and save space for desssert because the Matcha ice cream and the Affogato are both super good
We have 2 very good Japanese restos here in Ortigas and Marufuku is one of them. The food that you will see that i will post here was all very very good. Of course Japanes food comes with a price but for the quality that we get well worth it!:-)
Just a infront of University of Asia & the Pacific, this restaurant is located. Overall, it was good, not really impressive but it was worth the try.
Location- 3/5
It is actually somewhat hard to find especially if you're coming from shaw, or san mig avenue. It's somewhat hidden but you will see it's sign.
Taste and Value for food- 3/5
Our bill was 2070. It really is expensive here. Unlikely because it is infront of a university. The sashimi set costs 740. Nothing really special since it was just 3 slices of salmon, 3 slices of tuna, 5 pcs of squid strips, and a little bit of uni. The tempura was 410: That was what we liked the most. Their batter was light and crispy, very tasty too. Their prawns were big. We also loved the thinly sliced wagyu beef. For 185 pesos, it really is worth it. Generally, we didn't really appreciate it but it was a good experience.
My personal fave is the afogato coffee jelly! Must try
When in Ortigas,
one of the best places to get Japanese Food would be Marufuku.
Off the beaten path, this resto is known to lure those Japanese food lover.
Admittedly, it may be a pain to locate it if you aren't familiar with the area.
Believe though, it is worth a try.
Once you enter, they take care of you. Either you seat at the bar, a table or get their private room.
Service is direct and hands on. I love how when seated at the bar, the chefs would like to interact with the diners and offer/suggest amazing stuff.
The menu is comprehensive. A lot to choose from.
As for me, UNI is awesome , just as their eel.
Their Oysters are also incredible. With Miso and torched. I love it.
The ebi tempura are also huge and perfectly cooked.
The yakitoris or grilled meat sticks are all right. Wasn't marinated with the usual sauces, though, only salt, and pepper.
Honestly, it may be a bit expensive but for the quality, I guess it is worth it.
Also,
I was not impressed with the drinks though as they were somewhat watered down.
Maybe stick to the liquor or tea next time.
Will I return? Yes definitely.

By far the best place to eat sushi, sashimi and Japanese skewered meats over the grill. I have yet to find another Japanese resturant that serves fresher sushi than this place. They have a wide selection of foods but of-course the sushi and sashimi takes it. I've tried most of the menu, and everything is cooked perfectly.
My friend and I had lunch earlier this week at this hidden Japanese place called Marufuku.
There are set meals available but we opted for ala carte so we could try everything.
We ordered Miso Chasu Ramen (Php 280), Marufuku Roll (Php 550), Ebiten (Php 400), Okonomi Modan Yaki (Php 390) and Butabara Shio (Php 70).
While waiting for our orders, we were served anchovies, which is salty and spicy.
I must emphasize that the servings were huge! The ramen can be shared by 2 persons. The length of each Ebiten is twice the size of the usual tempura. The Marufuku Roll was amazingly delicious!
However, I didn't like the Butabara Shio, which tasted more like charcoal and the Okonomi Modan Yaki was a little bland for me.
Our total bill costed us a fortune, but I wouldn't mind spending more for Japanese food of good quality like Marufuku.
Marufuku is a small but fancy-looking Japanese restaurant hidden away at the edges of the Ortigas Center (along San Miguel Ave.). It offers a quiet, peaceful ambiance; everything just looks so neat and clean. Very Japanese indeed. The appetizer was some deep fried little anchovies (okay, they're dilis). Crunchy with a sweet and nutty flavor, this is a nice preparation for your taste buds for the good stuff to come :).
We had some of the spicy salmon salad to start off our late lunch. We were expecting a modest serving but we were (pleasantly) surprised at the hefty plateful of food they brought out. Mixed in with the fried bits of tempura batter was the salmon itself, dressed in mayonnaise (Kewpie maybe?). All of this copious amount of protein/fried stuff was put on top of some sliced cabbage and nori. Good stuff, the dressing had the creamy sweetish taste of mayonnaise. It wasn't spicy enough to make you sweat, but enough to get your attention.
I usually order a curry dish whenever I eat at a Japanese restaurant for the first time, so I went ahead and got their tonkatsu curry. Besides the curry sauce, they also put in some tonkatsu sauce on the pork; not the usual serving style I'm accustomed to. I wish they would have served a bigger, more man-sized portion of pork - but maybe I just got spoiled by Yabu :). Taste was good; the tonkatsu sauce adds a bit of sweetness/sourness to each bite. Overall, par for the course.
The sushi in this place is well known among many people, and the totoya roll (basically ebi tempura sushi) is a good example of why. Big serving size, plenty of fillings, and a whole lot of shrimp tempura made this one a hit. Very filling and tasty, especially with the tempura batter and scrambled egg bits on top. It's pretty much a complete meal with every mouthful.
Marufuku is a great place to go to if you want some good Japanese food that doesn't come from a fastfood chain. It's a bit on the pricey side (around 1200Php I think), but the sushi is well worth it. And so is the ambiance. If you're looking for a katsu place, you're better off elsewhere though. Next time I'm here, I'll try out their barbecued offerings. Or maybe I'll just have some more sushi :).
Ambiance is alright. Awesome kitchen, from the looks of it, youl know youl have an authentic experience of their dish!
Best seller is their kamemeshi rice that needs to be ordered in advance.
Robata grill is divine!
Ramen still needs more improvement.
