We never forget our favorite the old chinese restaurant Shantung in quiapo while our childhoods. We love to eating old fashioned comfort foods , fresh and no chemical too much. Shantung fried chicken, fried dumpling, hot and sour soup and shredded pork with bamboo are best selling and no change taste ! We miss and never forget loyal short waitress for many years since quiapo and west avenue q.c . now she is retired already. we will eat there again !

Shantung Restaurant has been my fiancee's family restaurant since the early 1990's. Food and service are exceptional. We just had a despedida party last week and every one enjoyed the food. We ordered Hot & Sour Soup, Stirred Fried Bamboo Shoot, Pancit Canton, Fried Chicken, Calamari as appetizer, Young Chow Fried Rice, and many more. I highly recommend this place.

The Chinese Restaurant that is still kicking at the "Millenials Era" which its settings, take you back to modern China. 5 star for all the great things I experienced especially: 1. Very Hospitable Crew and Staff 2. Food is Amazing, Fried Noodles, Chicken, and many more but most for me is the Buchi damn! 3. Great Manager, justin. Negotiating with them is very easy, they're open for negotiating the quotation for something! Me and my family have been a loyal customer of Shantung Resto since I was like 6 or 7 which I'm 22 right now. Never they have failed to accommodate us with great Service! Shantung has that taste that you'll always crave, even in quarantine. No matter how much homecooking we do, we still indulge in Shantung's Chinese food once in a while. This restaurant is definitely one of the places we'd first visit once it's safe to go out.

Getting to know the legendary Shantung...

Foodie friends described it as legendary or part of their childhood memories.

There is something about restaurants with decades-long-history that intrigues....

Shantung Restaurant. 1104 West Ave, Quezon City. REDISCOVER! A family run Chinese restaurant institution will be celebrating their 62nd Anniversary this August 2020. Lunch is an opportune time to discover and to have a feast with some of their best selling dishes. The menu is so vast, what you will see on this post is only 10% of their offering. A well loved brand that is poised to create more family moments in the years to come.

MUST! Shantung Fried Chicken - classic, deep fried chicken in a thin but flavorful batter. Buttery in taste, tender and moist.

Pata Tim with Mantao - great for large groups. A center piece for dinner with family. One would enjoy portioning the meat with the mantao for everyone in the table.

Szechuan Shrimps - not as spicy as i imagined it too be. Very tolerable, can be enjoyed even with the most sensitive of palates.

Salted Egg Fried Pork - very light salted egg taste. Tender pork with the just the right amount of crunch.

Shrimp Balls - coated with mantao pieces, it is a bigger than your average meat ball, steaming hot when you bite it too soon after being served. Make sure to dip it in some sauce for that added flavor.

Crispy Canton - another classic dish, stir in lightly so as to retain some of that delicious crunch.

Hot & Sour Soup - served pipping hot with pieces of curdled blood. Cold Cut Platter - a sampling of Shantung's best selling cold cuts. Dessert: Buchi - classic in its make. Very nice meal ender. Recommended when in QC.

Shantung has been around for more than 60 years but moved locations thrice, this West Avenue branch being the latest one. I haven’t been here in yearsss but let me start off by saying that it’s not my first time here in this branch and nor in the previous location from decades ago because Shantung is a childhood favorite of mine and I am so glad to be back here after so long. So it wasn’t surprising that I truly enjoyed the feast they had prepared. The food is still how I remember them to be - delicious classic Chinese comfort food.

We tried so many dishes but let me highlight my favorites although everything was delicious and each person in our group had our own favorites which if you put together would be everything they served!

My favorites are:
The crispy fried chicken with red (sweet & sour I think) sauce, it’s the only fried chicken I eat sweet & sour with, it just works and it’s how I’m used to eating it ever since I was a kid. With other fried chickens though it has to be ketchup or gravy, only either of the two.

I also loooove the fried shrimp balls. Soooo goooood! Hot and freshly fried, these balls are prepared by them with no extenders, sometimes even freshly rolled for frying just upon receiving the order from the customer. This one is a must order and together with the fried chicken and some fried rice, I’m all set!

But wait, if you could squeeze in the classic Hot & Sour soup too, it’s another must-order (their version is my fave, not really as sour nor as spicy as others I’ve tried, just right and just the way I like it).

Their Pata Tim is ultra tender and perfecf with rice but even better with their steamed bread or mantao. Warning though, their mantaos are huge!!!! And I mean that in a good way hehe.

The Szechuan Shrimp is another favorite of mine, ca’t get wrong with well cooked spicy, saucy shrimps. Extra rice please! Yum!

Their buchi is soft and chewy and packed with delicious filling. Thinking about it now is making me crave and sad at the same time because I was only able to eat one since I was too full already, wish I had eaten more now that I look back or should have had some for take out LOL.

Lastly, we ended the meal with ultra refreshing lychee almond jelly. It really is the perfect ending after a very tasty meal. It has a clean fresh taste. To tell you honestly, I’m not too fond of almond jelly (I’m a mango sago person) but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I loved it. And even moreso when I learned that they make the jelly in-house too.

That’s what so impressive about Shantung, they were able to continue the recipes / dishes we loved from decades ago and still maintain the quality. We were told that dishes are all cooked upon order, nothing frozen or reheated and they make even their own dumpling wrappers and brew the iced tea themselves.

Just a warning though, don’t expect the ambience of Shantung to be chic or elegant like those of the bigger and pricier and/or new Chinese restaurants. It is smaller and their interior is less modern but I think that’s part of their charm. Makes you feel nostalgic eating here especially if you’ve loved them too from decades ago.

Shantung is family-owned and the owners are very hands on and Justin, who assisted us, is very friendly and knowledgeable in the history, operations and offerings of the restaurant. They do delivery within the area (via Food Panda and/or grab food if I’m not mistaken, don’t quote me on that though, best to inquire with them directly) or you can have your orders picked up (ex. thru lalamove) plus they offer catering services too.

I'm in my 50's and I could say that I know Shantung. To be more precise about it, I grew up with the brand. I remember dining with my family in the same restaurant, ordering the same food and enjoying the same Chinese feel.

However, one can see the age of Shantung peeping through. The Chinese restaurant  is old. Really old.  Shantung needs a renovation. A major one. To bring back the old vitality, the old pizzazz. As they say, to bring back the glory days.

But glorious food never left. We tasted the old Shantung touch in every dish served. And my favorite?

The Shrimp Balls. Textured pieces with shrimp flavor with every bite. I just love it.

Of course, the Pata Tim. I remember that no lunch or dinner at Shantung can never be complete without this very tender pork leg with dark sauce.

Another staple in our table is the Shantung Fried Crispy Chicken which can be eaten as is without the sauce or catsup.

The Yang Chow is another must-have (look, I grew up thinking that a Chinese feast will never be enjoyed with plain rice!) that I set aside Intermittent Fasting for awhile and just gorged.

Steamed Dumpling. Do I really need to elaborate?

And for dessert, Butsi and/Almond Gelatin with Lychees. Perfect with hot tea.

My Shantung revisit was an unforgettable one. Couldn't help myself recounting the old days with my millenial foodie friends who listened patiently. Will be back, Shantung, and this time with the family.

Visited this restaurant on the 15th of March 2019 with Glenn Joseph | Jogpen and was able to meet other food enthusiasts. One thing I liked about Shantung is that it is accessible via MRT so getting there is not a problem even with a short notice.

Foodwise, everything is great! This place is totally one to visit if there is a family event or simply dine in for comfort food. I fell inlove immediately with Patatim and Crispy Fried Intestines! I guess the strongest point that this restaurant possess is their consistency in keeping the flavor intact and authentic since it started more than 60 years ago. If you are looking for heirloom chinese cuisines then this is a place to go to. Their price range is both reasonable and affordable.

Customer Service is good, they are attentive and they are knowledgeable about their large menu. If there is an improvement that I will look forward to is their ambiance, the interiors needed an upgrade but as for now it is functional so I don't really mind.

Personal Favorites:
🥢 Patatim
🥢 Shrimp Balls
🥢 Fried Intestines
🥢 Fried Chicken
🥢 Steamed Dumplings

I never thought that I'd go all the way from the South just to come here at Shantung for the love of the comforting Chinese food, and I must say, I never regretted coming here!

For the appetizers, we had their Hot & Sour Soup. They say it's a crowds' favorite but for me I didn't like the taste, maybe I'm more of a nido or crab meat and cream corn soup kind of girl.

For the mains, we have tried Pata Tim, Shredded Pork in Tomato Sauce, their Signature Cripsy Chicken, Yang Chow Assorted Meat Fried Rice, and Cripsy Noodles with Assorted Delicacies. For fried dishes, we had the Shrimp Balls, Fried Squid with Salt & Pepper, Fried Intestine, and Fried Dumplings! My favorite Chinese dish is Pata Tim that's why I have high expectations for their Pata Tim, and I'm glad it tastes great! Isn't exactly how a regular or traditional Pata Tim tasted for me, it was different but still so good. I also love their Shrimp Balls and Cripsy Chicken, both crunchy and savory on the inside. The squid was a bit spicy but delicious, and the shredded pork was also unlikely good. Their Crispy Noodles are as the same level as I had in Mongkok, and it's very comforting. Almost all of their dishes are a hit!

For the desserts, we had their sesame seed balls or famously known as 'buchi/butsi' and almond gelatin with lychees. I love their buchi! Right amount of mongo filling, perfectly steamed! II'm not a fan of lychees that's why I didn't try their gelatin.

For the drinks, I have only tried house blended iced tea and not powdered-- good as well.

The ambiance of the restaurant feels like I'm in an old or ancestral homes at China, yet there's nothing wrong with feeling homey. Thumbs up for their manager and his staff for being kind, attentive and courteous!

Hoping to come back soon!

The place is spacious and it's fit for family gatherings, and other private occasions and celebrations. Service is excellent. Parking is available. The ambiance is very private.

I won't forget their Patatim, it was so tender and savory. Because of that, I paired it with the rice The meat was gelatinous. It is one of my favorites.

The crispy pancit was made saucy because the serving of the sauce itself is big enough. It was salty, but I like it!

Shrimp Balls - they used real shrimps, it has a crunchy texture on the outside but soft and flavorful inside.

Dumplings - if you like the soft and light dumplings, go for the steamed one. The fried dumplings were crispy in texture. I enjoyed eating it even without soy sauce.

Fried Intestine - one of my favorites. At the very first bite, you can easily figure how tasty it is. They can make it more tender.

I personally love Shantung’s fried chicken! This is best eaten when freshly served and hot from the pan. In my opinion, the chicken itself is already flavorful and I prefer eating it even without the sauce. The skin is crispy on the outside and the meat is juicy on the inside. Another dish that I like is their steamed dumplings — a classic chinese delicacy.

60 years of consistency and excellent tasting mandarin cuisine

Me and my family eat here a lot. My grandmother even celebrated her birthday here. We all adored their dishes and how amazing the flavour is.

Shantung Fried Crispy Chicken
- classic crispy fried chicken. It will make you say "malutong!"
Shredded Pork in Tomato Sauce
- absolute personal favorite. Pork in tomato sauce gives it a sweet flavour
Pata Tim "Pig Leg in Brown Sauce"
- soft and tender. Smells really nice. Definitely a must for any dining occasion
Fried Dumplings
- classic favorite
Steamed Dumplings
-personal favorite
Yang Chow Assorted Meat Fried Rice
- we all want special rice. This does not disappoint. You can eat it as a stand-alone
Crispy Noodles with Assorted Delicacies
- crispy noodles with a twist. The sauce adds more delicious!
Butsi
- classic dessert your kids will love
Hot and Sour Soup
- a must try! It's soup like no other. Its hot and sour and definitely unique
Fried Squid with Salt and Pepper
- I'm addicted to this. I want this as a snack when I watch movies

I love Chinese food, it must be the seasoning but the large portions which are meant for sharing with your family and friends. The longevity of the restaurant speaks not only of their great food but also of the great people who run it. SHANTUNG, has been around giving us Authentic Mandarin Cuisine since 1958. 60 years of their famous bestsellers.

(F)ood:
What we had here:

● Hot Sour Soup - one of the bestsellers but this one is unique as it contains piig blood that makes it tastier. But I prefer my Hot Sour soup more sour and spicy as this one is a little mild.

● Crispy Noodles with Assorted Delicacies - I am all for this crunchy noodles and the sauce is rightly downright delicious. The noodles are crispy and salty and can be eaten on it's own and that goes same for the sauce. You can top it on some rice.

● Shrimp Balls - ohhh I love these and even got into third servings of these balls. Shrimp encased in fried mantao. Perfect as appetizers!

● Fried Intestine - I don't really eat innards but these are just tasty and perfectly crispy. Eat it while it's hot.

● Shantung Crispy Fried Chicken - love this beststellar dish. It's a 60year old recipe handed down from generation to generation so would argue with that, it really is a clasdic treat.

● Pork in Brown Sauce / Hong Ma - delicious, lightly seasoned tender pork belly that is perfect with mantou.

● Szechwan Shrimp - love the spicy and salty hint of this number.

● Fried Squid in Salt and Pepper - I always order this in other restaurants and I find it here equally tasty

● Steamed Dumplings - the right amount of filling to wrapper ratio, yummy to dip in the combination chili and soy sauce

● Buchi - yummy because it was served hot after cooking. The filling is nutty and yummy

● Almond Gelatin with Lychees - I am in love with this dessert. Love the fruity and sweet

(A)mbience:
This branch has been here for 25 years and it is an attestation of great things that they are doing here but lthey can update their restaurant just to be able to ride and appeal to the millenial audience. It would be more brilliant if they update and sanitize well some of their utensils.

(B)utler Service:
The food came out fast and the service was just ok but could have been better.

ang “shantung” mga daliri ko ay not enough to feast and finish these authentic “hao chi”. their recipes have not changed since 1958 - if this resto was a person, they’d enjoy a senior discount already, free movie screening every mondays and tuesday, saka don’t forget ang pa-cake ni mayor 😹

kidding aside, their offerings here screams of legit Chinese cuisine and patrons and it’s a must visit if you’re around the West Avenue QC area. what i loved the most was the 60 years old chinese style fried chicken. that fried batter was amazingly airy and crunchy and the meat was juicy and the flavor had a hint of 5-spice to it, yammeh!

my other lovelies were:
-fried pancit canton: im not a fan of fried noodles then mixin’ it w/ the sauce to make it soggy again- but this?! this?! was astoundingly good. the noodles itself you can snack on coz it’s already that good and salty (me like) and the canton sauce was the bomb, it was even complemented the yang chow rice sooo well!
-shrimp balls: pure diced shrimp encased in mantao then fried- oMg, iba itooo! a tad salty, but not to the point to make you cringe.
-hot and sour soup: mind-boggling to see and taste the diced pig blood in there. it was a delicious surprise to have ‘em all in one warm slurp.
-pork in brown sauce: this.is.legit.toothsome! the pork was tender, the fat was oh so soft and the taste was packed w/ what dreams are made of... super delicious!!!
-mantou: not in pic because it only took a few mouthfuls for me wolf it down. i know, it doesnt have any taste but there’s something to it- the steam?! the bulky yet fluffy bite factor?! the though of bread?! i dunno, but it was the best w/ the pork brown sauce.
-buchi: it was served to us out of the fryer and boy i didnt inda the heat. crunchy outside and sticky gooey inside made me really elated!

[2018-12-26] It started out as a cloudy day and it started raining before I arrived on site. Fortunately it was very accessible to public transport. Just 2 PUV + MRT rides from Pasay so not difficult to go from where I was. We had iced tea while waiting for the rest to arrive. The food started to be served after a while. First was the hot and sour soup. It was a bit too mild for me but was still ok (I had more than three bowls, hehehe). It would be better with more spice & stronger sour flavor.

Shantung has been at that location for the longest time already. I can remember that my relatives with Chinese blood would bring us here to eat their famous Crispy Chicken and Yang Chow.

And I am so happy to be back after a very long time of not eating here.

Ambiance - 3.0/5.0
As mentioned, I've been eating here for quite some time so I can still remember those times when their chairs are still those foamed ones. Now, they replaced those with foldable ones which is easier to maintain. However, there are some mosquitoes under the table.

Service - 3.5/5.0
The service is pretty okay. It was not a standout but it was good. I have a feedback which was acted upon fast, so I commend everyone. I just suggest that they should sanitize their plates, glasses and utensils well.

Food - 4.0/5.0
Hot and Sour Soup - the soup was flavorful and generous in toppings. But if you want to have a more sour soup, ask for a Black Vinegar.
Pork in Brown Sauce "Hong Ma" - the Pork Belly is tender and is better with rice. While the sauce is tasty and would be good with Mantou.
Fried Intestine - It was crispy. But I suggest it would be better if it was more crispy (like Lechon Macau skin).
Shantung Fried Crispy Chicken - the Chicken was really flavorful and crispy even if it is already lukewarm. Also, each Chicken is pretty big. Their star dish indeed.
Shrimp Balls - crispy on the outside, very tender on the inside but surprisingly, the Shrimp Ball is intact and does not break at all.
Crispy Noodles with Assorted Delicacies - the Crispy Noodles is good on its own and is not salty at all. While the sauce that is included on the meal is flavorful and pretty generous both on the sauce and toppings.
Buchi/Butsi - it is pretty big. However, not my favorite but I one of the best ones.

First time here, Dad said he dined here when he was small! We pre-ordered the Stuffed Chicken two days before, it's one of their special menu. It's a boneless chicken with stuffed garnished glutinous rice. It's better than what we had in other Chinese restaurants.

Ordered their famous fried chicken too, we are told that the restaurant uses fresh chicken instead of frozen one, very clean and crisp taste of how real chicken tastes like without being overly seasoned.

Forgot to take picture of their Bacon Wrapped Shrimp. I appreciate Shantung took the effort to do manually complicated recipes, like this shrimp paste inside the bacon 👍

Will visit again for their dumplings as suggested by restaurant staff 😊

Always been a staple since childhood. I still remember my parents taking out food from Shantung when we go swimming as kids. Chinese style fried chicken and hot sour soup is always the go-to combo. Sad it downsized and seemed like it wasn't as prosperous as before but good thing the food quality did not suffer. Change was the same since I was a kid until today!

2nd review:
Tried something new at Shantung - lemon chicken aside from our usual order of salt and pepper squid with garlic rice. Serving was generous too. The tangy sweet and sour flavour was good. Still loved the squids more though. 😉

1st review:
When we needed a quick Chinese food fix, we go here to Shantung’s.

Food is ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. You can never go wrong with their salt and pepper squid, beef brocolli and crispy noodles with shredded pork. Always delish everytime! Even our take aways were yummy too! Food portions of a medium is enough for 2 hungry foodies (which is normally for 2-3 pax) hehe. One friend suggested to try their Shantung Fried Chicken but will reserve that for another visit.

Service is ⭐️⭐️⭐️. The waitresses are friendly and accommodating. Though they sometimes are away to get food in the inner closed parts of the resto. You also have to get your bill a little bit ahead of time since its kinda slow.

Ambiance is ⭐️⭐️⭐️. It has an old chinese bistro feel. A little upgrade wouldn’t hurt.

Overall, great experience!

This is my boyfriend’s family’s fav chinese resto. I really love everything we order here especially the salt and pepper squid, spicy tofu with broccoli, their fried chicken and the crab and corn soup — it has real crab meat. A go to place serving old time fave chinese dishes. They are known for their signature fried chicken. Their beef ampalaya is really delicious. Different from the usual that is saucy and too much taosi. Sadly their chicken last night was bland. Very bland. It didn't have their signature spices. I think they missed it because even the aroma was missing.

Its really not your typical expectations of a Chinese restaurant.  I consider this as a community restaurant even if its floor area is bigger than your usual community go-to restaurant.

If you are looking for friendly service, affordable price points that matches its palette grade and a Chinese restaurant atmosphere with good ample parking slots, then, Shantung is the right place for you!

Most of the food reminds you of a home cooked meal.  Nothing fancy but hits where it matters both the tummy and the feel of being among with love ones.

Downside to this restaurant is that when it starts to get crowded, the kitchen crew can't keep up with the orders =(

Been here twice and I enjoyed the food that we ordered. The food here is affordable and most are good for sharing. Their best seller is the fried chicken which is actually good. Very crispy and juicy. My favorite dish is the lemon fish fillet! It's a little bit sweet and not that sour. The steamed dumplings is also good, especially for its price. I forgot the other dishes that we ordered before but I go here for their lemon fish fillet. That's unforgettable. Haha. Service was fast too.

Ordered their famous Shantung Fried Chicken, fried dumplings, hot and sour soup, steamed fish fillet, mixed vegetables and yang chow fried rice. Super enjoyed the fried dumplings - best eaten while it's hot! The crispiness of the wrapper was the perfect contrast to the juicy filling of pork and kutchay inside. The fried chicken is crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Tip: The sweet and sour sauce for the chicken is a tad bit too sweet for me, so mix it with their chili sauce for a bit of a kick! The mixed veggies is okay, was expecting more servings. The portion size of steamed fish fillet was huge. Would definitely be back again for the dumplings and chicken.

Kudos to the service of this place. When I dine I am very particular about service as it affects the dining experience overall. I could tell they are very well trained and was very attentive - they move like clock work.

The landmark to this iconic resto is PNB west avenue. Unfortunately, the original echague branch has been closed . But this branch still takes you back in time with the interior. Try their specialty hot sour soup , it is wonderful. I say wonderful because it had this ingredient which I have been looking for in hot sour , Pork blood. Also with the right amount of acidity. They are known for fried chicken and pancit canton. The chicken is good, no over powering taste in the batter, goes well with their sweet- sour sauce. Pancit canton quite salty for me, but I like the quality of the noodles. The seafood hotpot was a so-so. Not so flavorful . Our orders all good for two.

Shantung restaurant is best known for its Mandarin cuisine. It has been around since the 1980's, its original branch used to be in Quiapo before they transferred to West Ave. Some of their popular items are the Hot and Sour soup, fried dumplings, crispy chicken, sweet and sour pork and oyster cake. If you are on the adventurous side try their frog legs. The serving is a little bit small but prices are affordable. :)

Kinda out of the way from the usual Chinese restaurants, this place serves the best Hot and Sour soup in Metro Manila. Patrons from as far as Antipolo would troop to this restaurant just to have their filling. Also peculiar to this restaurant is the Beef Barbeque which is served on a plate (not on a stick) and is tender and delicious. These two dishes are a must try.
