Please update. This outlet at SM North already closed months ago. We like eating here for our katsu fix, especially our kids. Hoping they reopen an outlet here in the north.

So this is probably one of my favorite tonkatsu spots and I think this is even better than Yabu. So the tonkatsu set here is amazing because you get unli rice miso soup salad fruits and even pickle sets which yabu doesnt have. The miso soup from this place is probably one of the best I have tasted because it has a unique taste. The tonkatsu here is also delicious and cheaper than some other restaurants. But one of the problem here is its a little masikip but overall this is a good restaurant and I think in the long run it will be noticed by more people and eventually will attract many more customers.

For a really good Tonkatsu at a reasonable price, go here. Unlimited serving of shredded cabbage, partnered with their sesame dressing, is very refreshing (my favorite to be honest). The staff is very attentive and the place is clean and homey.

Had dinner here tonight with two of my college friends. Typical Japanese style of greeting from the servers when you enter the resto. Food quality matches the expectations, can be at par with other tonkatsu players in the Manila scene.

Easily my favorite katsu place in Manila. Their food is always fresh, good, and comforting. Compared to other katsu places, I think Maisen's is the crispiest one. Whenever I feel down, I always go to Maisen for a pick-me-up meal and it never fails.

The apple sauce for their Kurobuta set is amazing.

We dined here again last Saturday for our final round of vouchers. Food was all good and delicious. All Katsu Sets we ordered were delicious. Always order the Loin Katsu set for a little bit of fat. The only thing that was different now is that the rice they used in their sets that day was not japanese rice. Halatang halata na dinurado rice na siya or any local high quality rice. Iba na kasi yung lasa at texture ng local rice compared to pure japanese rice we ate at their branch a month ago.. I don't know if changing their rice to local rice is applied now to customers who pay using metrodeal vouchers. Sayang naman kasi may discrimination pag ganun and style nila.

Just ate here with my family today. Used our vouchers from metrodeal. Grabe sobrang sulit! We ordered the loin katsu set. Sobrang lambot ng meat. Melt in your mouth! Definitely better than yabu. Their rice is pure japanese rice! Ate aroung 2 and 1/2 bowls. Their karaage is superb! Pati yung sesame dressing ang sarap! Yung 2 tonkatsu sauces ang sars rin! my son also enjoyed his chicken katsu set. Definitely will eat here again!

Food: I really like their specials. You should try their katsumabushi set (the one with the bowl in the picture). For me, their sauce and miso soup set them apart from other japanese restaurants.

Ambiance: The restaurant is well-maintained.

Service: The staffs are very accommodating and friendly. When they notice that you are out of rice or cabbage, they will come over and ask if you want a refill. They make sure that the needs of their customers are well attended.

(No pictures because cousin and I were ravenous, and instantly ate when food arrived)

We ordered 2 katsu sets: dory, and minced pork with cheese (similar to the Menchi katsu in Yabu).

The serving size for both sets were adequate; the minced pork had 3 round pieces, while the dory had (if i remember correctly) had 8 slices. The dory slices in my opinion had too much batter, but at least it was crunchy and golden brown. They had two different sauces for the katsu; one was slightly sweet (quite similar to Yabu's), the other on the salty/savory side. For the rice, it was sticky and can easily be picked up with chopsticks. Sadly though, they didn't offer brown rice unlike Yabu. Now on to the sides: the pickles were too salty for my liking. I prefer lightly seasoned ones to refresh the palate after a bite of the katsu. The cabbage was good. You could dress it with roasted sesame sauce or the vinaigrette style sauce. Fruits were sweet; the only set back was the seeds still on the watermelon. Miso soup (and the refills) were always hot, and tasted good. There was always a couple of pieces of tofu and seaweed in every serving.

The staff was attentive as well. No manager or any member of the staff visited us, or asked us about the quality of the food though, unlike some katsu restaurants.

Overall, the quality of the food is good, and the price is relatively cheaper than other katsu restos serving unli rice and sides. Would go back again at some point.

Ambience: Serene, Spacious and Clean. It's a nice place to bring your date, and even hang-out with your friends and have a good laugh.

Food: We ordered Prawn Katsu Set and Kurobuta Loin Set which come with miso soup, pickles, rice, lychee gelatin, tartar sauce and cabbage. (Unlimited, except for the rice 😝)

Judgment: Love the miso soup! ❤️ For the prawn, it is crispy in the outside and surprisingly tender and tasty in the inside. it's kinda oily though. On the otherhand, the Kurobuta is appetizing and all the sauces were delectable. Fine ingredients were used in these sets. It's kinda pricey though most especially the Kurobuta Set but it won't let you down. It's good value for money.

Service: The staffs were attentive and nice.

This place is definitely worth a try, and worth coming back.

Haven't had Tonkatsu in a really long time, and dining here at Tonkatsu Maisen was a real treat. We ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry set and the Cheese Minced Pork Katsu set. The chicken was tender and the curry sauce was typical, had hoped that there would be a little spice to it. The minced pork I loved, after a couple of bites warm cheese oozed out and it was really good. The staff were attentive, though they did not offer more cabbage and miso soup, unlike other Katsu restaurants. Still it was a good meal, and I
would definitely come back again here soon.

Since I'm craving for Tonkatsu and I've been to Yabu a lot of times, I want to try another restaurant that also offers Tonkatsu.

I ordered Kurobota Loin Katsu Set for PHP 590.00 that comes with rice, veggies (cabbage), miso soup, pickles and fruits. You can ask for refill if you want to but they will not offer it. The meat is okay, nothing special. Still tonkatsu. Their miso soup is good. I asked for refill actually.

My sister ordered Pork Sukiyaki Set. The soup is good also. I think they are expert with soups. :D

Service is good. Servers are attentive. They also provide hand towels before eating.
Quite expensive but good to try also.

Continuing my journey in finding the best Katsudon in town, I tried Tonkatsu Maisen at SM North Edsa. I got the Katumabushi Set (Php 390) which is one of the items under the "Maisen Specials". It came with bite sized katsu chops that were served over rice in a cute bowl, tamago, dashi stock, a plate of different garnishes (sesame seeds, wasabi, green onion), and of course, fruits on the side. What I liked about this dish is it's not your traditional katsudon where you get a sliced katsudon and you dip it with tonkatsu sauce. The Katsumabushi gives you a bit of creativity--- you can scoop the tonkatsu and rice into a separate bowl and pour the dashi stock, or you can add sesame seeds before you add the tonkatsu. The possibilities are endless! I'm proud to say that I am now not a purist when it comes to eating my Katsudon. The service for this branch is also comendable (although I arrived early at around 11 AM and there was only 1 other customer while I was eating).

I dunno if it's just me or there's really something enchanting about Maisen's tonkatsu. Of all the tonkatsu places I have ever been to, Tonkatsu Maisen leaves an impression on you. I think it's on their breading that makes it different. You can tell that the pork-to-crumb ratio is just right, leaving the juices of the pork still intact, but not too oily for something deep fried. Also try their sandwiches, their unique food sets, and their other generous offerings.

It has been a while tince I ate katsu and I chanced upon Maisen at SM North last Saturday. I've ordered their Kurobota Tenderloin Katsu set. The katsu was juicy, and thick, and very tender. The sides: miso soup wasn't terribly overpowering to the point that it's very good, and had seconds. The cabbage was good and crispy, also had seconds for it, but I did find the sauce selection a bit 'bitin'. I also ordered their Suntory Whiskey High Baller too just to try. It tasted similar to Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey, but as strong as regular whiskey.  The staff were helpful and offered me seconds for cabbage, soup, and fruits. Since I ate in the afternoon, they offered free Iced Tea as well, aside from their hot house tea.  Price is at a premium though, but I find it worthy.

What I love about Tonkatsu Maisen is that they offer other dishes aside from katsu. I got to try their Katsumabushi Set, a different take from the usual Katsu sets. It is a bite-size tenderloin katsu topped on rice served with dashi stock and onsen tamago. The manner of eating the dish is different from the usual because you will need to scoop the katsu and rice on a separate plate, add onion, sesame and wasabi, and finally pour the dashi stock. You may also opt to add the onsen tamago, which I did and it added a different flavor. The dashi stock is rich and flavorful and it complements the katsu. So, if you want a different katsu experience, you have to try this.

We ordered the chicken and tenderloin katsu, which was served with unlimited cabbages, miso soup, salad, and fruits.

Prior to our food, house tea was served and the towel to wash your hands before eating. After 15 minutes, our food was served, fresh and hot. There was the miso soup to start the meal, not to sour nor too hot so I liked it. The salad was actually some pickles. Not that significant. Because I was aiming more for the roasted sesame sauce that goes excellent with the cabbage (I had an additional 2 refills). The chicken katsu was quite similar to Yabu, but I think it has more breading? Or maybe it lacks a bit of taste? Anyway, I ate it with their 2 sauce provided, one was teriyaki, the other is familiar but I cannot remember the name.
I also tasted the tenderloin, which had more taste than the chicken katsu.

The staff was very attentive to our needs, asking us if we want refills even before we have finished our current food. It was quite similar to Yabu in terms of food and ambience, though I would prefer this one because it's cheaper haha

I have been to Maisen, SM North EDSA a lot of times but I can definitely say that I am satisfied with the food quality and service. It might not offer unlimited side dishes in all of their Tonkatsu meals and not as affordable like the other popular restaurants with the same offers, but the food are worth our penny.

Their special sets are my favorite among their menu - Katsumabushi Set and Pork Sukiyaki Set.

Lunch out with the family after our driving orientation. Lol. Dined in at the first restaurant we saw that doesn't have a line since we were really starving then.

I had Mixed Katsu Set, loved everything in my bento 'cept for the potato croquettes. It felt almost too mushy for a mashed potato. Others were a bit oily but atleast it wasn't soggy.

My brother had Tenderloin Katsu Don Set while my mom ordered Pork Sukiyaki Set. We tasted each other's meal and so far, it didn't disappoint.

The Tenderloin was, I think, drenched in some sort of sauce which was good and moist. Tender, indeed. A bit soggy tho but delicious nonetheless. As for the Sukiyaki, it tasted good but nothing special.

What I like the most was the condiments they had on the table. Both Vinaigrette and Sesame tasted superb together with the chopped cabbage. And both Sweet and Spicy sauce was bursting with flavors when paired with any of the Katsu set.

We also had Tamago and Chicken Karaage. Didn't like the Tamago, was too sweet for my liking and too soggy. On the other hand, the Karaage was so juicy, yum!

The waitstaff was also nice and I'm sure they could improve in being attentive. The young Manager or maybe Assistant Manager, I think was very nice and accommodating.

Ambiance was okay, I find the place a bit too hot.. maybe because of the lights they're using plus, it was aiming towards the guest, instead of the table. The interiors was nice and homey too. Would love to go back next time.

PS: Shitty photo angle and quality

Super nice food, service and ambience! We had cream dory katsu set and chicken katsu set. Coz you see we're crazy about katsus haha. The cream dory and chicken were freshly cooked with crispy breading and soft fillet. The miso soup was great. And! It is consistent even with the refills! (Because sometimes the soup tend to be a bit bland when its a refill). They also gave rice tea and water before the start of the meal which was nice.

Two words: Exceeded Expectations.

Looking for a lunch place, Maisen was the last thing om my mind. First it was a tad pricey, and then, it feels like your regular tonkotsu, that once you tried it, everywhere else is the same. In recent months, I have tried Yabu and Tonkatsu by Terazawa and at the end of the day, its a breaded imported pork that is pricey.

So then, I met my old employee at the reception. She convinced me to try it. I told her I didn't like Yabu and she told me that theirs was different. And so I did. The place was clean and relaxing. I flipped the visually-beautiful menu and ran through the pages. It's your usual tonkatsu menu with unli soup, rice, and cabbage. I was supposed to order curry but I remembered my staff said that Maisen's specialty are the sauces, so instead I ordered the Mixed Katsu set, to try everything out.

The Mixed Katsu set has tenderloin katsu, prawn katsu, and potato croquette. One reason I love this set is the breading. I hate sharp breading and their breading is smooth. It is fun to eat. The potato croquettes melt in your mouth. Just by looking and tasting at the set, you will know that everything is carefully picked and prepared. The pineapples, which are often sour, tasted sweet. The sauces, which are placed on the table are to be mixed at your own taste level. They have the sweet blend, spicy, spicy salt, among others.

The servers are very attentive especially when it comes to refilling your tea or food. They are also very clean. While waiting for my food, I was observing a server preparing the fruit plates for the sets. He placed all the small plates on top of the refrigerator, and suddenly his elbow accidentally pushed the fruit and it fell to the table. I was curious as to what he is going to do with it. I was glad that he took the the dirty fruit and threw it in the trash can. I was relieved knowing that I will be eating clean food today.

I hope they are consistent with their food and service as I have yet to go back to try their curry sets.

My new favorite Katsu place!!!

This japanese resto is similar to other katsu places which offer unlimited side dishes and DIY serving of sauces.

Before we begun to eat, the waitress asked if that was our first time - and it was - so she explained to us how to choose the sauces for the meals. I really appreciated that gesture of them because not everyone is familiar to the sauces.

My friends and I ordered 2 Tenderloin sets, Loin set, and Mixed Katsu set. The cabbage side dish was my absolute fave! The sauce for this was superb. I enjoyed my tenderloin set, which had no fat and fried the perfection. It was not at all greasy, and it suits its price.

The crew were very attentive. The place was quite private and spacey, even for a resto in a mall.

If you love Katsu like I do, it's a definite must that you should try MAiSEN.

(Visited the Megamall branch). Probably the best Katsu place we've ever tried compared to Kimukatsu, Yabu, Crazy Katsu, Tampopo and Katsu Sora. Definitely the best.

Ordered:

1.) Kurobuta Katsumabushi (pictured) reaaaally good. Soft and juicy katsu. The breading was just enough and wasnt too thick or oily. It also had taste as well. Enjoyed the experience of putting the soup in the pot on the rice!
2.) Sukiyaki (not pictured). Not super sweet and isnt drowning in soup. Really good too!
3.) Kurobuta Hire Set (partially included in the photos). true test of comparison with the other restaurant's "original" katsu sets. Definitely better. Not oily, not crumb-y (?), and isnt falling off of the breading. Best part is the breading has taste too so it isnt as bland or dry to eat.

Price is just right or probably a bit cheaper than the others. Hope they'll be able to keep up the quality of their food! :)

One reason to go to SM North's main building is the addition of Maisen. Interiors are great. I ordered the Stir-fry Pork & Ginger and was not that happy with my meal because the pork is tough and serving is a bit small. Sauce tastes great though. Next, the sukiyaki set is okay, for the price you get a side order of a tenderloin katsu. Sukiyaki can be shared by two persons.

Cabbage, soup, rice and fruits are still unlimited. Just like their counterpart.

The tonkatsu sandwich to go was dry. Wish i asked for some tonkatsu sauce to go with my take out.

Servers were not that attentive.

I will try to dine again and see if my next meal will be a better one. Wish me luck!

Unlike the other Katsu places that opened recently, Maisen is the most different from Yabu. It offers different sauce (although it still has the same sweet sauce as that of Yabu's), their Katsu is crunchier and their Prawn is really huge! Although, they have higher price than the others. I hope they could be more competitive with the pricing.

As much as man can't live with bread alone, I as well doesn't live solely for katsu. But they're surely a welcome addition to the growing local katsu market.

Great kurobota katsu meat. Even their regular loin and tenderloin katsu are good with just enough amount of fat and simply fried to perfection. Though even @Yabu and @GinzaBairin had the best katsu when they started, inconsistencies were later on encountered.

Aside for their pork, what may make them a little different from the rest are their Maiden special sukiyaki and the katsumabushi set that can be enjoyed in three various ways. Strange as it seems, I wouldn't be surprised if others would find it weird to eat katsu and rice with broth in a single bowl. It maybe nice worth to try for the adventurous foodies.

Condiments are also different somehow. The katsu sauces and salad dressings are limited but indeniably good. Their sandwiches are also better than their counterpart. But, their pickled vegetables, salads, side dishes and curry falls inferior to the leading katsu places and defenitely need some make over.

One of the better restaurants when it comes to katsu. The katsu pockets are absolutely something to try and the same can be said of the katsu sandwiches. The shrimp katsu sandwich had real shrimp chunks that gave it an interesting chewing experience. The katsumabushi set is also an experience in itself, offering several ways to savour it in. Tamago is superb as well and I also decided to try the kid's set to get a little of everything.

I'm fascinated about the interior design of their restaurant. It gave me a Japanese-esque vibe of the place.

I ordered the Katsudon and it was ok. The pork was tender and serving size was just right.

I also tried some of my friends' orders and their main tender katsu dish with the apple flavored sauce was indeed way better than my regular katsudon.

The katsu with the cheese inside was not good for my taste though. It couldn't taste the cheese.

They also have this dish with tender pork cutlets and a complicated 3 ways of eating it. It comes served with poached egg, sesame seeds, wasabi and chives, and a pot of soup that you pour over the rice. Good points for drama but the serving size was small. The cutlets were so cute and... konti! Heehee! My friends who ordered it said that it was bitin.

I wanted to try their curry but it was still out of stock. :( Next time I will try that and the pork sukiyaki.

The place was clean and bright. The service was good but it was obvious that the staff were still learning their groove.

Is this the best tonkatsu in Manila? No. I still liked Ginza Bairin better but this comes close because of their unique sauce.

I will definitely come back and try their other dishes.
