Banawe is home to many restaurantsβ€” a lot of which are well-kept secrets that residents and regulars only know. Unlike a lot of startup businesses that exist today, these veterans have stood the test of time and don't need social media to get the word across. While their interiors may not be picture-perfect, their heritage recipes and consistent dishes can speak for themselves. And I believe that new brands can learn from that: good food trumps the store's appearance any day.

One of my favorite restaurants to get good Maki is a place called Maki Haus, and yes, they misspelled house on purpose. This hawker-style shop serves simple and affordable Chinese food, most of which is good for sharing. But don't leave without having their soup. It's what they're known for.

Favorites include:
🐷 Maki: a heartwarming soup featuring bits of pork and a sticky (and I mean really sticky, probably because a slurry was added to it) soy sauce-based soup, topped with spring onions. The meat is very tender and peppery, and when eaten together with the soup, has a somewhat sweet aftertaste to it.
🐽 Maki Mi: an upgrade to the Maki. Same soup, same meat, but with the addition of thin egg noodles. Consistency of the noodles was soft and not mushy. Think of it as something like Pares Mami, but stickier and made with pork.
πŸ– Lumpiang Shanghai: a quintessential addition to every meal. Crispy skin plus meaty filling made with ground pork, spring onions and minced carrots? A real treat. Not a fan though of their sweet and sour sauce. It tasted like something off a bottle. Would be even better if they had some garlicky vinegar to go with it.
🌯 Fresh Lumpia: a vegetarian spring roll made with a steamed wrapper, lettuce and a mix of chopped veggies. Includes crushed nuts with sugar and fried seaweed (Ho ti) for added sweetness and crunch. It has a wide range of textures and flavors, a subtle taste, but is healthy nonetheless.

The food here is great. We always ordered beef maki here. and sometimes I would order the beef mami with noodle soup. We liked the beef maki here. Sometimes if we ate here for dinner, we would have a takeout for us to have it the next day.

One thing you have to know, Maki is my ultimate comfort food. If I'm sick, just give me a bowl of maki and a heaping cup of rice I'd be good for the day. I never get sick of eating maki. I was really happy when they branched out many years back (cause I won't need to go to Ongpin just to get a bowl). One of the reasons why I love living in Banawe.

PS: This "Maki" is not the Japanese sushi. Maki is this thick soup with meat. It's worth a try πŸ˜‰

Good and affordable maki soup with chunks of pork. Their kikiam was also good. Siomai was big and okay. Servers were polite, will probably return for the maki.

Normally, I'm not a Maki noodles fan (actually I'm generally not fond of soup dishes). But Maki Haus is my dad's favorite Chinese comfort food place (favorite being relative as it changes from month to month), so he dragged me there and told me to try their Maki before judging it

Wow. The Maki here is pretty good. Definitely still not my go-to comfort food, but would be happy to come back here. Their Oyster cake and fresh lumpia are also really good!! So, yeah - just sharing the love

Ordered for take-away and bought maki-mi, beef ampalaya and bamboo shells. Surprised by the amount of bamboo shells given to me. I’d rate 4 star for that!

Ambience
Ventilation was nice and cool where the aircon looked like it was constantly vaping away. Parking spaces are limited but at least they have a restroom. Restaurant is small so seats may be limited.

Food
If you go to Maki Haus, you have to try Maki-Mi! First the aircon was vaping, and then my soup was amusingly blowing bubbles, holding its form with every gust of wind I threw at it. If you're familiar with soup that kind of holds itself together as you raise it up with your spoon, this is that soup. The warmth of the soup was soothing for my throat and the consistency reminded me to find myself some honey.

Service
Waiting time was reasonable. By the way, you can ask for hot tea here. :)

My sister was craving for dumplings from Hugki Dumplings, so we decided to drop by for a quick lunch yesterday. Unfortunately, they were closed -- probably still on holiday break. πŸ˜… We walked a bit further and to our relief, Maki Haus was open, so we went in.

Maki Haus is the home of the Original Maki Soup, well, probably next to the Maki Places in Ongpin. 😊 Maki Soup is a thick Chinese soup that consists of tender pork cuts, garnished with some spring onion. It may be eaten on its own, or with noodles. Some prefer to drizzle some black vinegar in it, but I like it better on its own. Here's what we got for yesterday's lunch:

βœ… MAKI (Php 155 - Large) - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This was a childhood favorite, so one sip of the soup already screamed nostaglia. 😁 I loved how their pork didn't have much extenders or flour breading on them, unlike some other maki places. The serving size is quite big, and can serve upto 4 people. It had more than 10 pcs of pork (yes, I counted πŸ˜‚). The soup was super yummy, and is like a warm hug on a cold day! πŸ€—

βœ… OYSTER CAKE (Php 245) - ⭐⭐⭐
I had high expectations for their oyster cake, because I remember liking it when we ate here a couple of years ago. Yesterday, I found it to be just okay. 😞 It was a bit too oily for my liking, and didn't have as much oysters as I would like. The quantity of the vegetables were a bit less than my expectations, too. Fat Fook's Oyster Omelette is still the best one I have tasted, to date. πŸ€—

βœ… SPINACH GARLIC (Php 185) - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Okay I love this sooo much. I have recently taken a liking to eating vegetables -- not that I don't like them before... It's just that I like them even more now. πŸ’• It's actually quite expensive to order vegetable dishes in restaurants, and for some reason, their veggies are cooked better than how we do it at home. Their spinach are crisp, but didn't have those thick and tough parts that are hard to chew. The garlic brought a fragrant and wonderdul flavor to this healthy dish, and I can probably eat this all day. So yummy, refereshing, and healthy. 🌱

βœ… KIAMPONG RICE (Php 45) - ⭐⭐⭐
Nothing beats my mom's kiampong, so I'm not a super big fan of this. πŸ˜‚ Also, I do not like to have peanuts in my kiampong, but that's a personal preference. Their kiampong was flavorful, but was too plain for my liking. But I guess it's okay for a 45 per cup kiampong. 😊

Service was okay, but since its a casual maki joint, servers aren't exceptionally courteous, but they're not bad. 😊 Food is served warm and didn't take a long time to be served to us. The ambiance was that of an upscale eatery. The tables are too close with each other, so as a courtesy to the fellow diners, make sure to keep your voices low when you speak to your companions.

Overall, their Maki is something I would recommend to others, especially those who haven't tried this delicious dish yet. πŸ’•

Food was surprisingly good and so was the service. Can't say much about the parking and ambience, though!

Everything was relatively good, except for the hainanese chicken. It was just weird. The vegetables were overly cooked, but taste was still okay. Lumpia and gohoing were good, while the sweet and sour pork was just...okay, not to my liking, but some liked it.

Solid fookien chinese vegetable lumpia and maki soup! These are some of the food from xiamen where many of the filipino-chinese in the philippines came from. Dimsum is actually cantonese. Takeout maki and chinese lumpia is a staple in many fil chi households and maki haus is one of the best.

Good place to go if you're craving for traditional chinese comfort food.. They serve generous bowl of maki or makimi. Their special machang is big and full of meat inside. Menu prices are relatively cheap, especially for sharing..

The thing to get here is obviously the maki and maki-mi. It isn't the best maki ever, but it's the best you can get in banawe right now. Aside from that their other items are a mixed bag. Their siomai is not very good, as it is too dry and lacks flavor. Their fried chicken is quite nice, juicy and well seasoned. But if you're coming here, you're coming for the maki and you won't really be disappointed.

My favorite maki haus since I was a kid, original was the one at ongpin st - Manosa . Hipon rebosado, ma Chang ,maki, Chami all time favorites and Kikiam . Sincerity's Kikiam and quick snacks version of Kikiam are much better. As for the maKi (pork and gawgaw soup),no one beats maki haus.

Craving for MAKI? This is definitely the right place to be! However, the other entrees we ordered were a big disappointment. The bamboo shells, oyster cake, lumpiang shanghai and most especially the spinach with garlic were all bland, as if food for the sick in the hospital, a wee bit pricey as well!

Nice place for Chinese comfort food. Sticky soup with pork called "ma-ki" which you can have with or without noodles. They also have other dishes. But I only come here for "ma-ki" or "ma-ki-mi".

I only come here for the maki and the maki-mi. Yup they have a menu filled with food which could also be found in the nearby restos. But why would I order something else? It is called the Maki Haus after all.

If you are craving for Maki, or Makimi, Maki Haus is a good place to visit. Maki is a traditional Chinese merienda snack that is made with pork broth thickened with cornstarch then mixed with soy sauce and egg and topped with soft, fluffy pork. Ma (meat) Ki (thick soup) Mi (noodles). It is often eaten with fresh egg noodles. Sometime later, the Fish Maki was introduced. Equally good, but I prefer the original.

Traditional Maki is best eaten with Kiampong, Chinese salted fried rice, because the thick soup coats the rice well and the pork serves as the meat viand of the meal.Β

Maki Haus also serves other Chinese classics like Chayotsi, Sweet and Sour Pork, Lumpia, and Oyster Cake. I can say that taste is authentic. We tried their Chayotsi (stir-fried pork kidney with chives) and it was a great classic dish.

Store is very sample and they have a few parking spaces.

Place: Clean, adequately spaced. We went there on a hot day and the temperature inside thenplace was just right (maybe because we chose to sit on the table where the blast of the aircon hits directly)

Service: Quick, efficient.

Food:
Yummy. We tried
Salt and pepper spareribs
Pork siomai
Spinach garlic
Yang chow :)
