Frequently go to Power Plant, but it was only a week or two ago that I got to eat at Boon Tong Kee. I don't know, it just never appealed to me tbh. Not until I saw the displayed pork buns and the fact that I wanted to have something to write about in these foodie apps lolz.

Anyway.

So we went and ate here. We got their pork buns, siomai, fried beef fillet w/black pepper, fried rice, and something we didn't order: pork noodles. lol my mom ordered a chicken dish but they seemed to have confused it with the pork noodles.

The pork bun was good and I think it'd be a filling snack to get on the go. Didn't like the beef fillet, texture was too tough for me and I just didn't like the taste of it. Fried rice was alright. Pork noodles was good, although in the middle of eating I saw what seemed to be a small insect (roach huhu) floating around. Called the attention of the manager and they assured us that it was just some sort of spice and asked us if we wanted to get a new one - to which we declined. Our appetite plummeted hahahahuhu, but they did remove the pork noodle thing from our bill though, so that was nice of them.

Service is good, they serve their food fast. Ambiance is just okay.

Will probably come back, but only for a merienda of pork buns and siomai hehe.

Probably the best-priced Dimsum all you can that I've seen at P299. Extended until further notice, you can choose from a wide array of dimsum, plus unlimited Iced Tea! Everything we've tried was worth it.
Baked Pork Bun - ❤️
Steamed Pork Bun - tastes like Siopao Asado
Crispy Beancurd - 💚 the Greentea Mayo that goes with it
Siomai - very tasty
Crabstick Siomai - comes with eggdrop sauce, liked this more than the Siomai
Fried Springroll - contains meat, like lumpiang shanghai. Liked the sweet dipping sauce

Note: Late Review

Chinese New Year is fast approaching.  Some malls have their signature homage for the approaching festivities.

Power Plant has food stalls that sells Chinese fare.  One of them was Bong Ton Kee.  They sell dimsum,  pork buns (steamef and baked)  and laksa.

After dessert,  i decided to get some laksa for takeaway.  Reasonably priced at php 90, the serving is just right.  Noodles,  bean sprouts,  tofu,  shrimp and the laksa broth.  Asked for extra chili garlic oil,  just in case the broth aint spicy enough for my standards.  Best decision as the broth lacks heat,  i even added chili powder and oil to reach the level of spice that i prefer.  The noodles are soft,  despite the lack of heat the broth is flavorful.

Few days after trying Tim Ho Wan's famous pork buns, I tried Boon Tong Kee's baked pork buns and realized that there isn't really anything extraordinary about these pork buns that people have been raving about. It was a busy Sunday night at Powerplant mall and almost all restaurants were fully booked. We stepped in at Boon Tong Kee because it's one of the few restaurants that had not much people init. Apparently this famous pork bun is HongKong's staple "siopao". The place is skimpy, tables are tiny. The congee was rubbish. Laksa tasted like Nissin's cup noodles. Worth mentioning though that the service was relatively good and amazingly affordable price within the Powerplant vicinity. Sorry for being outright, but honestly there's a lot of room for improvement.

First time eating here. We decided to eat here and try their combo meal specials which was very cheap in my opinion. The combo meal comes with your choice of "ulam" over rice in a bowl, with soup, appetizers, and a glass of iced tea. We tried the roasted chicken rice bowl which was served on top of a bowl of fragrant Hainanese rice. First things first, the serving itself was a bit small, and the appetizer that came with the meal is just 4 pieces of pickled vegetables served with the brine. The chicken itself was very tasty and has that nice crispy skin on the outside. The rice was very tasty but it was a bit too little (bitin), there was more meat in proportion to the rice serving. Also, since it was served in a small bowl, it was bit difficult to remove the chicken meat from the bones since there is not much space to work on the bowl. Taste wise, it was very good and quite authentic as chicken rice toppings go

Because we were so "bitin" with the rice bowls, we ordered the sambal fried rice. The waiter told us that we can adjust the spiciness of this dish from mild to very hot. This dish has a mix of shrimps, peanuts, pork floss, and sambal. It was very good. The rice was moist and quite tasty! I can eat this all day. And we also tried the crispy pork belly which is similar to our lechon kawali. It came with a sweet chili sauce dip and it was very tender, not dry and the skin is very crispy. Taste wise, it's just ok for me.

Drinks was Iced tea which came free with our rice bowls.

The place is very clean and compact. They have a see thru kitchen where you can watch the chef cook up your orders. There is a flat screen television at one wall. The waiters were attentive enough. The experience was pleasant enough. At first I thought their prices are cheap, but seeing how small their servings are in comparison to other restaurants, I think their prices is just right.

Mom had been wanting to eat at Boon Tong Kee for the longest time but its always full (and she's the type who doesn't like to wait). Three years after its opening, the hype has already died down. Meaning -- anyone can easily book a table now. We tried their Signature Boiled Chicken (this was tender, but I like Tao Yuan's more), Chicken Rice, Poached Chinese Spinach with Assorted Eggs, Braised Beancurd with Crabmeat and Fish Roe and Prawn Toast. Everything were decent but lacked the omph to wow. Thanks to their trio of sauces which did the trick to make the dishes taste better. Finished with their Sago Gula Melaka with Vanilla Ice Cream which I enjoyed the most.

I think I just might have found the contender for Kowloon House's siopao.

I had the Premium Pork Bun. Two average pieces were served in a bamboo steamer. Sauce is definitely unnecessary for something this good. It has pulled pork, salted egg, and a slice of chorizo inside. The filling to dough ratio is 90:10. You can see the filling of the bun from the outside. It has that sweet and salty siopao goodness feel in every bite. It was "bitin" for two pieces. I was having a hard time figuring out how to best describe this bun.

I also had a taste of their Pork Siomai. You'll have 4 pieces for Php85. Mind you, it looked like one of those pre-packaged siomai bundles you can find from the grocery but this one, man, it was devious. It tasted so good I had to order another one. It was soft, has that pork-texture-goodness, that orange caviar thing on top was also delicious. Putting soy sauce was optional because it was too delicious and can be eaten on its own.

My mom had the Crispy Pork Belly Rice topping. T'was served lying on a bed of thai rice with a leaf of bok choy beside it. True to its name, it was crispy and juicy. Again, better eaten on its own.

The look from the outside speaks traditional Chinese with the big yellow sign in front and the red panels in the entry way. However, the grey finishing of the walls, transparent placemats with floral patterns gives you the feel of a modern cuisine. It was surprisingly pleasant.

Overall, it was good. Food's great. Place is cozy. Will definitely come back to try the rest of the menu.

Never intended to try their buffet tonight, but for their Pork Buns. At P348.00 per head, you get to try some of the staple Asian dishes like Sweet & Sour Pork, Beef Ho Fan, Roasted Chicken, Egg Drop Noodle Soup, Siomai, Butchi, and some Mixed Fruits. Well, the dishes didn't disappoint, but could have been served hotter. As to their signature Pork Buns, it's super lush! One of the best I have tried. Way better than Tim's for sure. The pork filling was succulent, sweet, and hot. The bun was chewy and had that perfect bite consistency. Very aromatic too.

Nice that they've got affordable set meals on weekdays (120-150PHP). It's got an appetizer (just cucumbers in sauce), soup and iced tea included with your rice meal, which is pretty sulit. Service was nice and welcoming, nothing spectacular, though the waiter was very soft spoken I had to lean forward to hear him repeat our order. The place was clean and quiet, but they should lower the volume of their music. They've already got the television playing in the background and the songs didn't really match the ambiance haha.

As for the food, I believe that while they don't have the greatest tasting dishes, they still taste good for its price. Portion size is big for the price and serving time is fast (about 10 mins, we were one of the only customers there at 8-9PM). Would come back when wanting a quick lunch/dinner at an affordable price.

Decided to have a client dinner tonight at another regular restaurant. We decide to try several things to test the menu as we where both very very hungry. So here are the favorites we tried which was a mix of a few different items from seafood to soups and roast chicken.

We tried for appetizers Prawn Toast with Green Tea Mayo (pretty good), half Crispy Roast Chicken (a little disappointed with this as was not as tender as I thought especially for the price), Think Soup with Fish Maw Crabmeat and Beancurd (a very good serving as they say it's for 3 people but u can certainly feed 5 people for sure with this serving), Yam Ring with Stir-Fried Seafood (Yam ring was a very interesting taste and pretty awesome with the fresh seafood) and of course we added all this with Yang Chow Fried Rice also this was a very large serving so for the rice lovers you certainly will love this :)

I am very happy. Chinese food really is comfort food. First time in Boon Tong Kee and the experience was great! Great, great food! My favorite is the #charsiu and the crispy pork belly. Ordered their chicken rice and everything just went well with it. God! I'm still thinking about all of that tonight. And surprisingly cheap! Winner!

And our server Jara is one awesome girl. Very attentive and she even told us about the unlimited dimsum. Must try and I will definitely be back!

Boon Tong Kee at The Power Plant Mall is one outlet that's perennially packed. Quite popular for family lunches or dinners. Perhaps it's because of their classic and staple Chinese menu selections. Originally from Singapore, I know Boon Tong Kee to be a good place for Hainanese Chicken Rice. Just like in Singapore, where you find Hainanese Chicken Rice, you'll also find Roasted Chicken which was my order for this visit. It's actually item number 1 on their menu which I guess it's suppose to mean that it's their top specialty. The chicken is crispy and salty on the outside from its soy sauce marinate. And in a contrast, in a good way, it's a bit bland on the inside. Pair it off with Hainanese Rice and it's one appetizing meal. It's served complete with soup. It's good to have on days when you just want something familiar and enjoyable.

Chicken rice lah? Better eat here than Wee Nam Kee. Try their crab roll, Cereal prawn and steamed or roast chicken. A bit pricey but worth it. Burrp! 👍
