Sugi is definitely a place to go for Japanese food. No wonder my boss and her family keep ordering food from this resto. My friend was impressed about the service and the food too..
Always consistent! Bravo! Perfect management and of course, best Japanese food in town... I am European and I go there since 2009! Absolutely nothing bad to say, all the opposite! Love SUGI <3
Love Japanese food so much, and Sugi is the place to be
Hi! It was a lovely and sumptuous dinner in celebrating my daughter's birthday. We celebrated it with gusto! The food, is great! We love Japanese food. The house is full, however, we were not disappointed, in terms of service and ur staff are very accommodating. We loved, that u have a crew, who sang a happy birthday to my daughter and gave her a coffee jello ice cream. Thank you and hope to see ur store soon,
I love the foods..and the service..thats all.still the best japanese restaurant for me..hahahahhaha!!!

Sugi is my and my husband's absolute go to date place for Japanese food. Both the food and staff are always on point. Their sashimi is fresh and succulent (I still remember the butter hamachi sashimi) and our forever staples Dragon roll, chicken teriyaki and katsudon, these are the benchmarks other Japanese restaurants have to meet. And though the staff may not always be the smiling kind, you can trust that your order will be there on time and that they will always be on call every time. We love Sugi so much that on the first day that I and our first born were allowed to go out of the house, my husband took us to Sugi. So technically, Sugi was our first family date. :) So do we come back for more? Well of course! We were just there last Love Month. :)
Japanese cuisine at it"s finest...service is quite good.
Seafood is very fresh and tasty. Salmon strips melts in your mouth. Taste and texture is very good. My only complaint with the place is the lack of good air conditioning, it was hot inside even at night.
Quality - 10/10
Service - 9/10
Value for money - 9/10
Ambience - 7/10 (it was too hot inside, please improve air conditioning)
try out the secret menu item 'spicy tuna maki (very cheap and tasty)'.
I would say that Sugi has been serving good Japanese food since time immemorial. Seriously, it has been there for a long time. And I did a revisit with a BFF, who is one of the conservative eater known to man. She's the type who would patronize a brand as long as she's happy. That was how I found myself with her in Sugi one dinner time. I'm glad we went.
My BFF had her Ebi Tempura and her steak and I, Salmon Cheese Maki. As expected, everything was in order even the dining staff did their thing as quietly as possible so as not to bother diners. One minor thing, though. I didn't so much like my friend's steak. For me, it was a tad leathery (but she was able to finish the whole thing).
Sugi has always been one of the go to Japanese restaurants that never fails to satisfy. My go to food here is the Katsu curry Bento. It has a generous serving of rice with tender pork cutlets with the thick and zesty curry on a gravy boat.
As a bento meal, it comes with the serving of potato salad, japanese pickles and hot soup.
The taste was on point, serving size was generous, and service was a delight.
Looking forward to come back!
Sugi is a place for top quality, traditional Japanese food. Prices are on the high side but their food is worth the money. I got the Chirashi Sushi (Matsu), which had a combination of local and imported seafood. The sashimi was amazing, really fresh and tender. We also had the Tenderloin Steak Teppanyaki which is one of their bestsellers. The meat was soft and juicy, and best eaten with white rice or the bean sprouts that came with it. I wouldn't recommend their Beef and Salmon Teriyaki Lunch Set though. I guess because it was cheaper than their regular items, it tasted average.
Consistently serving great Japanese dishes, a no fail resto that delivers all the time. Dont miss their tenderloin tepanyaki, Hamachi sashimi, zaru soba and kani spring roll. Friendly staff and food is served promptly. Itadakimasú!

This is the place where I started loving Salmon Sashimi. Back when they had a branch in Greenhills, I appreciated Salmon. I always chomped on Tuna and was disgusted on Salmon prior to the Sashimi experience here. This is one of the up-to-par Japanese restaurants in the Philippines. It is super hard to compete with a palette that’s been to Japan but they can do so. Surely, they are able to invite my tongue back to Japan.
Been to this resto twice and I could say their food is delicious especially the Uni which is seasonal. I love the high ceiling of the restaurant and the ambiance is good but nothing extravagant.
(Dont have any photo of the food items we ordered)
Had lunch here with friends a couple of weeks back
Beef tenderloin teppanyaki : It smelled so good. Meat was tender and juicy
Mini Agedashi : fried tofu in sweetish soy - simple and good
Spicy Tuna Salad: This is a favorite of the family. Fresh cubes of tuna with wasabi dressing is thd perfect pair
Tempura and tempura sauce : Good. Not too thick batter.
Sushi : consistently good
Service: unobtrusive yet attentive
Price : reasonable
Definitely coming back
Here is to 2018 and more food reviews up ahead, starting one with a classic spot in Greenbelt 2 but was just recently tried..
We were here for a post holiday dinner reunion with some relatives and booked a day ahead in one of their private rooms, which we thought was a good option since we had some kids with us. We were quickly seated and shown to our private room. Although the place feels dated, the water feature by the fountain, textured floors and high ceiling and glass walls still evoke that modern japanese feel.
Staff was friendly and attentive (a buzzer efficiently sends the staff to whatever we need). For starters, we had ordered initially the Salmon Sashimi but was unfortunately unavailable, so we had the Tuna instead. It was fresh, and the portions were bigger than the usual size.
Next we had the Dragon and Spider Rolls, both were good and fresh, with the right portion of filling and vinegared rice.
We also had the Spicy Tuna Salad, which I thought was the best among the sashimi and sushi starters.
For the mains, first came were the orders of the Teppanyaki Steak (medium and very tasty), the grilled Chicken (with bbq sauce, also yum), the Asparagus wrapped in Bacon (also yum), Chicken Karaage (just okay, a bit dry), the Ebi Tempura (it had the right size but texture wise, Ive had better versions), and cups of fried rice and finally the Sukiyaki (which is a family favorite)
All dishes were paired with their in house green tea.
I definitely loved the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff, although the presentation and the interiors felt dated, and the prices were a bit pricey, considering the portions (good for sharing at 2/3 persons), other Japanese places bat better scores in my opinion. Over all, it was a pleasant experience, and would love to try their other dishes.
Both the exterior and interior scream Japan! Their ebi tempura is small, not quite the bigger shrimp I was expecting. Tenderloin steak and salmon cheese maki are amazing! So is their miso soup. Not quite fond of the red miso though.
I rarely hive 5's... This one is an exception... The food was nothing less than awesome... The ambiance could use a little touch up... And a few of the servers could do better. But then again.. You come here for the food.... The food was tops... One of the best by far.. Pricey but quite worth it... Gotta come back here...
Had nice time here last night. Resturant layout is very good. I am a big fan of Japanese food. This place really give you the vibe of Japan. One thing I noticed that many Japanese eating here tonight, that said a lot about the quality and authentication. We have sashimi (Matsu), Salmon Maki, Unagi Don (Take) RECOMMENDED, and Ikura Sashimi. Drinks were watermelon shake and mango shake with water and house tea (hot). Everything we ordered were excellent. The service is remarkable friendly and very helpful with your order. I really like the place. Recommended to put in your MUST TRY list!

We ate here last night. Staff are attentive.
Salmon sashimi is fresh. Prices are quite high as compared to other Japanese restaurants in the area (e.g. sashimi at 450, other restaurants 300-350 and for me it tastes better). Miso soup tastes like the miso soup in Tsukiji market in Japan 👍
Ambiance feels "authentic Japanese" experience though the chairs are not that comfortable.
Great food and wonderful staff. Never a bad experience every time I go here! Consistent in both service of the staff and quality of food. Would recommend to all!
They always have good quality fish and the service is great. When Im not in the mood for sushi, my favorite is Kaki Gyuniku Steak. Beef + Bacon + Oysters in sauce. A+
Sugi is one of my family's well-loved spots. The taste and quality are consistent. Although prices have been increasing through the years, the food and the service justify that anyway. So we keep coming back.
Didn't get to take photos of all the food since they were consumed rather quickly. Sushi is always reliable and they make amazing sushi rice. Pictured is the chirashi matsu, ebi and kakiage tempura and chicken teppan. I also recommend their futo maki, radish sprout salad, spicy tuna salad, shiitake mushroom tempura, unaju, etc etc.
We ordered tuna/maguro and salmon sashimi. The tuna was delicious as usual, but the salmon sashimi was absolutely perfect! It was deliciously soft and tasted very fresh. We also ordered rice, tempura, and mackerel, which were all good. The gindara was heavenly, and its sauce was very flavorful.
The staff were nice and accommodating, though we had to ask for tea thrice before they served it. It was a busy night though and the food was really good, so we overlooked that.
Quite average when it comes to their food.
Excellent in terms of their interior and service.
Only tried soba, I think I have to try more from their menu to fully have a Sugi experience.
But for now, I am giving them a 3.5 😄
FOOD: 3.5/5.0 🌟🌟🌟🌟
PLACE/LOCATION: 4.0/5.0 🌟🌟🌟🌟
SERVICE: 4.0/5.0 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Food 5/5

For so many years, Sugi has lived up to its name. Its an authentic Japanese restaurant way back when "japanese cuisine" wasnt a trend. Never fails. Just one comment - though i know its some sort of style, I wish the chairs had a solid back rest for better comfort while dining, especially for the elderly. Otherwise, the dining experience has always been a pleasure.
Tonkatsu Teishoku by Sugi: MEH.
While it wasn't necessarily awful, the quality is undeniably inferior to that of dedicated restaurants that serve the same product such as Yabu or Maizen. In case you don't know, tonkatsu is deep fried breaded pork cutlet which is usually served as a meal with rice and soup.
My main issue: the meat is a bit dry. Better tonkatsu offerings would usually have thicker slices and would use pork that has more fat content specifically for this purpose: to keep the meat moist and tender, withstanding the effects of deep frying.
The breading is ok and the seasoning is passable. In the first place, the purpose of the breading is to protect the meat from heat and the seasoning should just be enough to highlight the meaty sweetness of the pork. So in this area, I'm ok with it.
Sidings and condiments are standard but you won't have that therapeutic experience of grinding sesame seeds with your mortar and pestle or drizzling your cabbage with japanese mayo. But that's just me nitpicking.
The place feels crowded but that's not necessarily bad for a japanese restaurant. If you want privacy, you can ask about their private rooms but I would assume you need to book for those ahead of time.
Verdict: I won't go here for the tonkatsu. At 450 pesos, the price is something you would expect for a restaurant in Greenbelt but I'd rather spend that money on Tonkatsu Maizen, Yabu and Tonkatsu Terazawa (all of them have a branch nearby). What I would be interested in is the Jo Kaiseki, a special Sugi 12 course meal.
Maybe I'll have a better chance witht that. I'd try that once I find the time. Joke lang. The Jo Kaiseki would set you back 2,000 pesos. So ipon muna.

It was my first time to eat here at Sugi. At first, i was to excited to try the Okonomiyaki, since it would be my first time to taste the japanese pancake, luckily it is available at Sugi. But upon tasting their okonomiyaki i was disappointed. Haha! Maybe my expectations for an okonomiyaki is just to high. Hahaha. It just a typical pancake. And i found that takoyaki is much better than that! Haha there is this "umay" factor. Their okonomiyaki is 8" and cut into 4slices. We weren't able to finish it since it's somewhat nakakaumay. Haha my friend suggest to try okonomiyaki to other restaurant. But i declined hahaha their nagi sushi were just a typical nagi sushi we ordered the TAKE from their menu.
Wagyu is not available in their menu now. So we tried their tenderloin steak. It taste like a typical steak too but it tastes good pa din naman. Ambiance is good.

Jap cuisine is my all-time favorite. We went here for dinner on a Friday night and I expected the place to be packed since I heard good things about the place, and surprisingly, only a few (around 2 or 3) tables were occupied. We reserved the private room in the ground flr for 10 people.
First off, the place had a modern-classy Japanese ambiance and the room we were in was small and intimate, a little too intimate lol but still, the privacy's appreciated.
We started off with sushi that's not on the menu, a sort of spicy tuna maki which the waitress recommended, (Ooh, secret menu, intriguing!) along with the salmon cheese maki. The spicy tuna maki was divine, the sushi itself was big, a little too big for me hehe. The salmon cheese maki was good as well. I think we also got california maki, which were good too, but again big, but it's all good.
For mains, most of us got the chirashi matsu, a bowl/dish of assorted fish on Jap rice, while others got the tempura set. Serving time was bearable. The chirashi was so colorful and pretty, with the salmon and tuna beautifully sitting there (I looove salmon). Unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures of the food.. It had salmon, tuna, squid (i think), tamago, and a sort of mackerel fish. I mostly just ate the not so slimy ones (still not into the too slimy/raw Jap food). Salmon and tuna were great, best paired with jap mayo. Tamago was sweet idk why?? Jap rice was good, has that right vinegar taste to it. The chirashi's serving looked small at first but the serving was so big (for me), I barely finished half of it.
We also got tempura, which took so long before it got served.. But atleast the tempura was great! Best eaten while hot.
We had a small buzzer to call our waitress for what we needed and I like that they're generous with the jap mayo. Service was okay, had to buzz every once in a while for water, etc and waiting time was bearable.
We were sooo full, all of us who ordered the chirashi only got to finish half. The spicy tuna maki was the star for me. Sushi's great here. Servers were just okay. Food is pricey, but dishes seemed authentic and food is good. 4/5 for good jap food. Overall, it was still a good dining experience.
Yay for my 1st review on zomato! 😁
My dinner here was just perfect keeping me full but not to the point of feeling bloated. We started off with a Salmon Cheese Maki for appetizer. With one bite you can taste the salmon blending well with the cheese and the whole experience in the mouth was just overwhelming. We ordered also Miso soup which does not differ from other restaurants. For the main course we had Tempura and Beef Tenderloin Steak. The Tempura's crust was not as crunchy as others I've tried which I like. I was disheartened though by the size of the shrimps which I didn't think was worth the price we paid. The Beef tenderloin steak was cooked just right and the softness was just divine. I like my beef seasoned well though so I dipped my beef in my mix of soy sauce. Overall, the experience was great but we paid such a hefty price for it. I would say I would come again some time when there's something special to celebrate.
Had kari kari bone for appetizer - so crunchy and a bit salty, thanks to its vinegar dip, to neutralize the taste, rating it 3.0. Beef Teriyaki has the rich beefy-flavor, I rate it 4.0.
Ambiance is homey with a very Japanese interior.
Kinda pricey. But hey! It is in Greenbelt. 😁

Went here 2 years ago and dined again last week but their food still never disappoints! If you're in for some real japanese cuisine feels, you can get a room (be sure to reserve early cause it's usually fully booked for lunch and dinner) where you'd be dining like how real japanese people in japan eat- on the floor. Their tenderloin steak is so tender, you'd be surprise to see yourself devouring the whole plate in just minutes! Of course, we didn't forget to order the forever Japanese dish staple, ebi tempura (I'm in search for the best tempura in town. Haha!), and it was so light and crispy--just what tempuras should be. Seafood teppanyaki is also very tasty, it matches well with their special sauce. Their California maki is okay, though it wasn't perfectly brought/wrapped together; rice and topping fall off when dipped into the sauce. Ambience is nice and cozy. Servers were okay but usually very busy because of how jam-packed this place is, especially on weekends.
In my opinion this is one of the best Japanese restaurant in the area. Ideal for business lunch with their secluded seating areas. The service level is also something to take note of.
Soon mag kikita tayo ulit sugi :)
Sugi knows what's up when it comes to Japanese food. We chanced upon this restaurant when my Dad asked me to look for a good Japanese place, and I saw this on Zomato. It's now on my top three (if not at the very top) list of Jap joints around the Metro.
Service is fantastic. The servers are very attentive, friendly, and willing to explain the menus. Plus they look super cute in their kimonos. Lol.
The interiors are nice and modern, but it didn't have that super "expensive feel" their prices warranted.
The food was daaaamn gooood. We started the dinner with some Uni (sea urchin) and salmon sashimi. They were fresh and tasted very clean (for lack of a better word) on the palate. Then we had the sushi; we chose one of their February specials. I forgot the Japanese name, but it has crunchy salmon skin, salmon roe, and sesame seeds.
Whatever that sushi is called, I recommend you try it right now while it's still on the menu. It had the perfect mix of crunch from the salmon skin and sesame seeds with the softness of the rice, and the nice explosion of salmon roe at the end. It was soooo good; I kid you not.
We also had some Ebi Tenpura which was so-so. Definitely the least spectacular one of the night. Breading could have been crunchier. Ours was a tad soggy.
We then had their beef steak (in photo) and unagi (eel in teriyaki sauce). We ordered the former in medium rare, and they cooked it perfectly. They were so soft, tender, and flavorful that we finished the whole thing even though we were really full. Unagi wasn't the best, though. I tried this smashing Unagi in a well-known Japanese restaurant in Taiwan (Fei Qian Wu), and it's been my golden standard for all Unagis since then. I'll let you know if I can find a place that served Unagi that can beat it!
Prices are steep. Like really steeep. We ended up spending more than 3,000 for just the two of us, so make sure to come with your tummies empty and your wallets prepared!
Sugi has been our family favorite for more than 10 years!
I never leave this place without having their beef teppanyaki tenderloin steak. The whole order goes to me! :) Quality is consistent. :)
Everything is just so japaniiiiice :D
Service is fast, staff are friendly, and nice ambience--still the same after all these years :)
The ambience was really nice, we ordered the crazy roll, spider roll, seafood salad, and chocolate ice cream. The sushi rolls were a little small for the price, the sashimi inside the seafood salad was excellent, and the ice cream was two thumbs up.
After hours of beating the traffic from mckinley to makati and after watching a movie... Finally! There was a reason again for me to eat!
Japanese cuisine has always been my comfort food.
Just beside tender bobs is Sugi. A reliable japanese restaurant that serves great Japanese food!
Ordered Cha soba ( cold green tea noodles ) and beef sukiyaki soba.. And of course house tea to complete the meal!
Best to reserve your table early because normally this place is full (dinner time).
Sugi has always been a comfortable place for us whenever we want to eat authentic Japanese Food. Aside from the fact that Sugi Greenbelt is near our office, it also offers variety of authentic Japanese cuisine , my top favorites will always be their salmon, sushi, sashimi , tempura and gindara.
Excellent food presentation , a bit expensive but it is complemented by quality food, great ambiance and excellent service. You can also reserve a room perfect for business meetings ,good for about 12 to 15 pax . This place truly deserves frequent visits.
Celebrated my brother's graduation. Was able to reserve 2 rooms (12 adults, 4 kids) on a Saturday just a day before. Tender ribeye. Fresh sashimi. Delicious tempura. Attentive service in their tatami room. Wonderful evening.
One of good Japanese restaurant out there, service is great. Ingredients are authentic and fresh , beef tenderloin tepanyaki is very soft. Place is clean and quiet

I had the chance to try Sugi when my boss in a previous job treated us for lunch. The food was delivered to our office hence, I never really got to experience the ambiance in their restaurant. Nonetheless, the food was absolutely good. It was actually one of the best japanese dishes I have ever eaten. For starters, we had a bowl of fresh sashimi (slivers of salmon and tuna meat). The melt-in-your-mouth slices of fish are of premium quality and tasted sweet.

(slivers of salmon and tuna meat). The melt-in-your-mouth slices of fish. are of premium quality and tasted sweet. For mains, we had. Makunouchi Bento which is composed of a full-course Japanese meal served. in single-layer lacquered box. This bento meal was served with a bowl. of miso soup. I really liked the tender grilled beef and the roasted
Sugi is the epitome of a Japanese restaurant for me. Their spicy tuna is so fresh! (It is raw). And their spicy shrimps is a joy to eat. I also love their tofu steak which is my standard for all Japanese restaurants here in Manila.
I will always love sugi for their gindara. That fish dish of theirs simply cannot be matched anywhere. The combination of sweetness and softness of the dish is without equal. That is THE dish for me in Sugi and what makes another visit worthwhile.

Sugi is my family's special place. I took my dad here for his birthday a couple of years back. We always order their Gindara. So far, no Japanese restaurant has been able to match the quality of their Gindara. The softness, sweetness and the over all quality of the dish is hard to match and well worth the price.
One of my all time favourites. I have come back here every time I am in town since discovering it in 2012.
If you're a big fan of classic, uncomplicated and fresh raw Japanese - this is the place for you. I've enjoyed some of the best tekka maki and maguro tataki here and service appears to be consistent - I am never ever disappointed.
Beautiful interiors with a lot of space and no shortage of staff so you will not be overlooked.
Loved everything we ordered. There's a lot of variety in the menu. Also there's a variety in the staff. Some were 'masungit' and some were accommodating. We ordered the most expensive sushi on the menu and we weren't disappointed. Pricey but I can say it's worth it. :)
My foster family from Davao's in town for a few days. Since Ming's favorite cuisine is Japanese, it was a battle between Sugi and another famous Japanese resto in Greenbelt. We're supposed to go to Little Tokyo but due to heavy rains and unbearable traffic jam, we opted for the ones around their hotel's vicinity. After a busy day at work, we all had dinner at Sugi.
For a group of five girls, I would say that we have a huge appetite. Especially because we did not order any rice tonight (yes, I'm on the defensive fence here). These are the items that I can recall - Yasai Kani Salad, Maguro Tataki, Imported Ikura, Hamachi Sushi, Hokkigai Sushi, Gindara Teriyaki, Unagi Kabayaki, Ebi Tempura, Tenderloin Teppanyaki, and Sukiyaki. Yes, these are just some of the food I remembered eating! And a few of the items were ordered on 2 servings. Aside from starving all day long (because I had 4 trade checks earlier and them flying in from Mindanao), we really just had to feed our souls as well since we want our kwentuhan to never halt.
Every single dish was served in a timely manner. We asked to be seated in one of the private rooms upstairs, so bringing in all those food was really a struggle. Nonetheless, we were able to enjoy 90% of 'em all. I personally love the Gindara fish, though I was kinda wishing it was served on a bigger portion. The teriyaki sauce blended well with the cod's smoky & flaky flavor. We all loved the simplicity of the Yasai Salad and the Maguro Sushi. The seafoods used were both so fresh; it's as if the fish are jumping onto your taste buds.
I have high praises for Sugi however I am only giving them 3.5 stars out of a possible 5. If not mistaken, it was already 6 months ago since my last visit here. The amount of their servings are getting smaller and smaller each time. I've noticed that the thickness/cuts of the sushi were getting thinner by the moment! I just hope that they would not let inflation issues affect the quality (and quantity) of what they have to offer. Taste is a huge factor, but consistency is also a key to loyal customers.
This is a long overdue review of, in my opinion, the best sushi bar in the metro. Try the hamachi, salmon, unagi, and uni sashimi along with warm sake and you'll never go wrong. ? prices are justified by the quality which has been upheld for more than 20 years now since the original sugi in Greenhills. No dead menu items here folks, only the best. #tradition
My cousin, his wife, and her godparents went to the Philippines a few days ago. I haven't seen my cousin in 8 years, so I asked him if we could have lunch or dinner before they leave. So, when they got back from Palawan, we had dinner at Sugi.
The place was easy to locate, but we had troubles with parking spaces. It was walking distance from Ascott Hotel (where we were all staying) though, but we chose to go there by car. Haha. Sugi has this very warm Japanese ambiance that makes one feel that you're really in a restaurant in Japan. We had this room reserved (the one in the picture). It's cozy and nice, but it's kinda hard to stand up once you're seated.
The servers were patient and attentive. Imagine serving 2 tables and a super kulit kid who asks questions every now and then. They even volunteered to put the "surprise birthday cake" (for my cousin's wife) in the fridge. And, they served it exactly right after we were done with our dinner. They sang an English and a Tagalog version of the Birthday Song. We didn't even ask them to bring dessert plates and slice the cake for us; they just did without being asked!
Anyway, we had their California Maki and Tiger Roll for starters. The slices were quite thick and quite big for one bite. Super yummy, nonetheless.
We had their fried chicken, steamed lapu-lapu, gindara, beef teppanyaki, tempura, and veggies. I actually loved their fried chicken and steamed lapu-lapu. The chicken were crispy and tender at the same time. They weren't oily. The steamed lapu-lapu was tasty and it wasn't flaky. Their beef teppanyaki was on the "a-tad-bit-salty" side of things.
It's a must try for Japanese food fanatics, though the price. I'd definitely try and persuade the H to have lunch or dinner with me here some time. :)
One of the best japanese restaurants in Manila. The ambiance is nice, the place is really spacious, the quality of the food is terrific. My favorites are the gindara terikyaki and salmon cheese maki
Food is great! I so loved their sukiyaki. They also have nice presentation/plating of food.
I also tried their mackarel sashimi and tempura.
Eat here! It's worth it! :)
We enjoyed the feel of this restaurant, especially the decor and dress of the staff. The service was excellent and there was a wide selection in the menu. The meals we ordered were very tasty and the pricing appropriate for this level of restaurant.
Our family's long standing favorite. Added bonus is it is right accross where we live so we are just a few steps away from good food.
My son goes for their Ebi Tempura, my wife for Chicken Teriyaki and I for their beef tepanyaki and fried rice. The same fare we have everytime.

For P500 per head, it was a quite affordable meal.
This is my family's special place. We usually went to the Greenhills branch but since that is already closed, we go to the one in Makati. I always get, and I mean always, their gindara dish. Then to top things off, I order their coffee jelly. Both of these are a staple for me and a part of our family "tradition". You really have to try it out for yourself.
I'm very wary when it comes to sushi or raw food and I'm very meticulous with the freshness and quality given that I easily breakout into hives. Took some clients out for lunch and we were definitely not disappointed. I've never been a fan of tempura but this one was pretty special. One bite and it was an instant hit. The succulent shrimp was perfectly cooked and wonderfully encased in a delicate, light yet flavourful amd crisp batter. The sashimi and sushi was beyond perfection. You can easily taste the distinctive sweetness that comes only with fresh and quality raw seafood. Everything felt like a perfectly orchestrated sea of various flavors - sweet , savory, fatty and lean select cuts of tuna, salmon, squid and shirmp. Even the simple appetizers were impressive! The only thing thay put me off was the service was slow and the dishes weren't serve accordingly /in order. My colleagues waited for the rice which arrived after almost an hour, which, by that time, the beef and tempura has ran out amd everyone has finished all the sushi, sashimi, appetizers, and soups (which should have came last). Refreshments/dessert arrived even before the previous orders have been served. But overall, the quality of the ingredients made up for it. I just hope they work on the proper sequence of serving dishes.
I could honestly say that "Suki kami ng Sugi". Whenever we go out for Japanese food, we always end up at Sugi (especially when they still had their Greenhills branch *sigh*).
Sugi is known for it's high quality authentic Japanese food. I always start with a Sashimi Moriawase Take (mixed local sashimi) then the Beef tenderloin and Shrimp Tempura and if avaiable, the oyster teppanyaki. I guess those are my comfort food whenever I dine at Sugi.
In celebration of Father's Day, my family decided to dine in one of our favorite Japanese restaurants here in Makati - Sugi! I know you may be intimidated by how the place looks and sounds like, and that may cause you to presume that it is expensive here in Sugi. However, I'll contest that it is not (well, not too much at the least). With proper selection of dishes to order, you may still enjoy dining here Sugi without breaking the budget too much.
Here let me share with you this post, to aid you in knowing what to order in this fine-looking restaurant!
Japanese Food at Its Finest:
Before we actually came into the restaurants, I already planned 75% of what we would order taking into consideration the price of the dishes. In this way, I was able to lessen the bill by 33% as opposed to our last visit.
Kaiware Kani Salad || P250
Radish sprouts and crabmeat with choice of dressing - (we chose Japanese mayo). This Salad featured a unique kind of veggy base which is more on the sprout family rather than the usual leaf one. So, this alone made it really different and refreshing for my taste buds. What added flavor to the salad was the Japanese mayo, which I found highly stimulating together with the kani!
Mini Agedashi Tofu || P170 Fried soft beancurd with sweet vinegared soy sauce
The Mini Agedashi Tofu was really a hit! It was rightly fried leaving the outer part considerably crisp and the inside very much tender and nice. Due to this delicate frying technique, it had a “burst in your mouth sensation”. On top of all, the sauce was really sweet and savory, and distinctly Japanese!
Sanshoki Maki || P340 Sushi roll with tuna, ika (squid) and cucumber - 8 pieces
This Sanshoki Maki was also a considerable first for me because of the blend of raw tuna and squid! I didn't know that both of them when mixed together produce high stimulants for the taste buds!
Chawan Mushi || P135 Steamed egg custard soup served in special Japanese cup
The Chawan Mushi of Sugi can be considered one of the best ones in town! It had a very soupy and soft texture that slides into the tongue. Also, the seafood taste together with the blend of steamed egg created an awesome tandem of harmonized flavor.
Maguro Nattou || P200 Fresh tuna meat with fermented soybeans
The tuna was definitely a first for my sight! It was presented very neatly, and got its tantalizing appeal. You eat this dish by mixing all the ingredients together as you pour some soy sauce. You need to try this one just for the fun of it. Of course, it tasted much like your Tuna Sashimi, but the added dimension and flavour were very much interesting.
Okonomiyaki || P340 Samurai Pizza (Japanese Pizza concoction of cabbage, thin sliced pork, egg, spices and special sauce)
This Okonomiyaki was one of the finest I had so far with its appropriate "soft yet firm" texture, and its rightly sweet and savory sauce on top.
Ebi Tenpura || P390 All prawn tenpura - 5 pieces
I actually don't have an idea why Sugi calls it Tenpura rather than Tempura. Anyway, this tempura dish was cooked delicately with the batter being crunchy and the prawns being fresh and fine! Yup, the result was fantastic! In addition, the sauce that came with it had a well-balanced flavor which went pretty well with the tempura as well as the components of the mixed tempura.
Tenpura Moriawase || P320 Assorted tenpura (prawns and vegetables)
This mixed tempura included 2 prawns, 1 fish and the rest were veggies such as shitake mushroom, golden mushroom, eggplant and okra. Although the taste was just fine, I would still recommend the Ebi Tenpura over this, considering the price and the satisfaction.
Yakitori Moriawase || P280 Assorted chicken barbecue - 6 types of Chicken
The Yakitori Mariwase was really interesting because of the diversity on the plate. It was like a mixed of street and restaurant food placed together in a single dish, enhanced by a uniformly sweet and tasty sauce. By the way, you have an option whether to just use salt or teriyaki sauce. We opted for the latter, and I suggest you do the same as well.
Beef Teriyaki || P420 Grilled thinly sliced beef tenderloin with Sugi terriyaki sauce
The Beef Teriyaki was at its finest from the taste to the texture! Well, I think the Teriyaki sauce of Sugi did the trick!
Saba Shioyaki || P500 Grilled mackerel, slightly salted
The mackerel was very much fresh and tasty. It was cooked in such a way that the pure potential taste of the mackarel was maximized!
Friendly note: The fish bones were removed, although a very few remained.
My wife loves Sugi it is one of her favorite Japanese stores. I was surprised to see that the Sugi store in Greenhills is not listed in Zomato... makes we wonder if it is still open. I was also surprised that the menu of Sugi is not available at Zomato.
We had late dinner at Sugi (which might be the reason why some of the receptionists and wait staff were not as friendly as usual - less 0.5 points in rating)
My wife had her favorite: Tori Kuwayaki (Spicy deep fried chicken legs with Sugi teriyaki sauce). This is a really good dish and highly recommended. It goes well with the Yaki Meshi rice but I believe it can also go well with plain Japanese rice. I believe this is the best chicken in teriyaki sauce in Manila. I am not sure, but I think this is the first time I tried this dish and it will not be my last.
with a side of Yaki Meshi (fried rice) - highly recommended. The Yaki Meshi has a distinct smoky flavor that I found to be distinctly Sugi.
Ebi Tenpura (all prawn tempura) - highly recommended.
Niku Udon (noodles with beef and hot soup) - This is my 1st time to order this dish (I just wanted to have a light dinner). My wife loved the sweet soup (comparable to sukiyaki but less sweet). I was surprised with the sweetness of the soup (I prefer savory soups with my noodles). I might not order it again. My wife will definitely order it again.
I was totally against eating at Sugi as I wanted a light dinner as it was quite late in the evening. My wife got an earful of complaints from me and the PHP 1300 tab for a late light dinner did not help in appeasing me. (I was having a very stressful week and it was just Tuesday evening).
Some days passed and I recounted my experience at Sugi and saw that the PHP 1300 for Tori Kuwayaki, Yaki Meshi, Ebi Tenpura and Niku Udon was reasonable (in terms of food quality and taste). The Sugi staff were not as friendly due to our late dinner (we came in at around 930/945pm and the store closes at 10pm)
We highly recommend Sugi. I highly recommend that you dine at Sugi way before it closes.
The experience was good enough (3.5) - I would rate it higher it the bill was under PHP 1000.
Happy dining!
It may be pricy but the food in this resto is worth it. Still one of the best places to get Japanese food. Always consistent in taste and in service.
My mom's favorite Jap place.
With that said, I can say that I grew up eating here, I even spent my college grad celebration here. The place, being near my school in San Lorenzo Village, it was easy to get there and enjoy.
Japanese food has always been my go to comfort food when I feel like I need to cleanse my palate and my system with all the junk, and fats that I willingly put inside me.
So, I love the sushi and sashimi here. Of course I won't forget their maki.
My mom would order their ramen before or their emperor's box (I dunno if they still call it that way) which is a set meal for one that has soup, rice, viand, choice of maki and tea.
Nostalgia...
I simply love it here.
