Located across the popular watering hole El Chupacabra, H&J (Heckle and Jeckle) Sports Bar and restaurant looks like a typical expat bar. If it wasn't for the Zomato Foodie Meetup, I honestly would've never thought about going in. It was filled with people on a Thursday night, the al fresco dining area was full, the turnover of people at the bar was fast, with some others enjoying rounds of pool/billiard games.
For food, they have continental, Indian and Filipino dishes, most of which are bar chow.
Highly Recommended: Chicken Nuggets, Masala Papad/papadums, Masala Peanuts, Tinapa and Laguna Cheese Pizza, Happy Pop Jello-O shots, Calamancello
What we tried:
~Masala Peanuts - Peanuts tossed with onion, garlic, chilli, and other savory spices. the foodies present fondly call it peanut sisig, because it was the perfect peanut dish to pair with beer. It has got to be our favorite pulutan out of everything
~Papas Terribles - spicy potato wedges with garlic and whole chilli, for me, they were your usual potato wedges, only with a kick
~Truffle Wedges - I couldn't really taste the truffle oil, but it was okay.
~French Fries SPL (Dutch Style fries) - sloppy joes heavily topped with ketchup, mayo, mustard and spices, some enjoyed it, but I wasn't a fan
~Chicken Nuggets - like the upgraded version of McNuggets, with a homemade honey mustard sauce, each piece was juicy, and not too oily, considering it was deep fried
~Masala Papad (papadum) - big round thin spicy Indian crackers, with the same seasoning as the masala peanut. Sort of like an Indian version of nachos, except this one was waaay better, and perfect for those who love spicy and fragrant finger food.
~Onion Bhaji - onion fritters cooked okoy style dipped in a yogurt mint sauce, i liked the mix of flavors, but it was a little meh.
~Vegetable Pakora - like vegetable tempura, except the batter is heavier and made with chickpea/potato flour, also dipped into the yogurt mint sauce
~Vietnamese Spring Rolls - vermicelli, carrots, cabbage, peanuts wrapped in rice paper then deep fried, with a sweet vinegar dip
~Pizza- We got to try Tropicana (typical Hawaiian flavor plus bacon and bell pepper), Carne (Meatlover's), Four Cheese, and Tinapa and Laguna Cheese. I liked the last one the most because I was surprised that it was a good flavor for pizza. The kesong puti tasted a lot like salted egg, but the overall taste of the pizza wasn't too salty.
~Pollo Diavola - Roasted Chicken served with mashed potatoes and veggies, It was okay, not dry, but it needed more flavor
~Dal Tadka (yellow vegetable curry) - spices weren't too strong, and I was looking for more depth of flavor
~Channa Masala (savory indian chickpea dish) - chickpeas are slow simmered in a blend of onions, tomatoes and spices, I almost mistook it for curry. I like the texture of this one, but if you don't like garbanzos, it may not be for you
~Drinks:
~Sangria: a little disappointing for me, because it was less fruity and tasted more of Sprite
~Happy Pop Jello Shots - tried the Strawberry and Lemon, a really fun and pretty drink to get
~Calamancello - really refreshing! It's like a calamansi sorbet, but with lambanog (coconut whiskey) I would prolly have this every time I drop by H&J and would recommend it to everybody else!
Overall, I had a great time at H&J. It looks and feels like a sports bar, but they also have private rooms on the second floor for more intimate functions, as well as a really nice lounge area for group parties. They have different themes for each day of the week, so depending on the day they have corresponding promotions. As for the pool table, loser for the match gets to pay around 20 pesos for every game lost. Haha. I had a small issue with ventilation though, as the whole restaurant was open air, even with the aircon on, so it could get a little humid.
And, btw, drop by the small, exclusive smoking area, it's my favorite part of the restaurant, don't forget to look up and see what I mean. :)
