Tucked in the busy neighborhood of Makati beholds an iconic, timeless, and exceptional treasure-- The Old Swiss Inn. I have to admit, it was my first time to visit the restaurant. Upon walking up Somerset Olympia’s steps, I was greeted with brick red and wooden walls and decals, classy interiors, and overall intimate aesthetics. These details help set the mood for comfort and class to prosper; from their remarkable, authentic Swiss-European food, to the impeccable hospitality The Old Swiss Inn provides.
Being in existence for over 70 years, The Old Swiss Inn has been serving their patrons and new guests with hearty Swiss-European fare. All ingredients are sourced from the best local farms, producers, and manufacturers, therefore having stellar and consistent quality shown in every dish they concoct and serve. Let me tell you a little bit more about it:
Fresh Corned Beef
- It’s not the canned breakfast staple we grew up knowing. It's beef brisket that has been boiled until it's tender. Served with sautéed cabbage, boiled potatoes, in a pool of very flavorful, yet surprisingly light broth, each bite of brisket shines, for you can really taste how well prepped, smoked and seasoned it is. Each tender morsel melts in your mouth soon as you take a bite. Finish the dish off by soaking it up its juices with their house bread, consuming it with rice, or eating everything up, with a little bit of each component.
Gnagi
- Cured, baked pork knuckles, served with sauerkraut and boiled potatoes. The Gnagi itself is a unique experience on its own; the contrasts of crispy, crackling pork skin, with juicy, fork-tender meat inside is mind-blowing. It's not every day you eat perfectly crispy pork skin still attached to its juicy meat-- the best of both worlds! When paired and eaten together with sauerkraut made in-house, boiled potatoes, and signature brown sauce, let the pork knuckle's savory, well-seasoned flavors linger in your tastebuds, kicking in a pleasantly sour taste that helps bring out the pork and sauerkraut's slight sweet tones, all married together in their bold and rich brown sauce.
Smoked Scamorza Fondue
- This enchanting treat is available at The Old Swiss Inn on February 10! Dip into this magical cauldron of silky and luscious apple-smoked cheese fondue and diced tomatoes. Served with a side of bread and apple slices, these are the perfect vessels to enjoy the fondue. I would suggest you to try it out with the bread first for you to really have a moment to let the cheese shine. I love how lightly smoked it was on its own, with a hint of sweetness given off with the diced tomatoes mixed in. If you want to take the experience up a notch, dip and swirl in an apple slice to the fondue. I know it may sound weird at first, but once you bite into the apple and cheese piece, you’ll first taste the subtle smoked cheese layer, suddenly bursting in with the apple’s juicy and sweet core. This cheese lava is definitely worth scraping every morsel and every square inch of the bottom of the fondue pot!
Classic Toblerone Chocolate Fondue
- Definitely a kid and adult’s dream come true; The Old Swiss Inn’s classic dessert is made of Toblerone, melted in with pure cream. This decadent pool of Swiss chocolate is served with fresh fruits and marshmallows made in-house. It’s best dipped, swirled, and coated in with their marshmallows— as soon as you bite into it, the marshmallow slowly dissolves in your mouth, slowly marrying in the melted Swiss chocolate. The Classic Toblerone Chocolate Fondue is available in milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and white chocolate (my personal go-to would be the classic milk chocolate).
The Old Swiss Inn in Makati is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I regret not knowing about The Old Swiss Inn before, but I am definitely looking forward to my next visits!
